I’ve only ever tried herbstluftwm on two occasions; once by accident, and the other due to (I suppose) morbid curiousity. It did not end well for me ~~ I resorted to switching to another tty to kill the X session in order to return to my ol’ familiar stacking WM.
From skimming those docs + tutorial that I (websearched and selected and) linked for you, I’m certain they do mention “layouts” and that you will probably want/need to craft a layout to suit your taste (or? to suit the dimensions//resolution of your display? or). If you cannot be bothered to read the docs, shrug, let’s just hope you will not be eaten by a grue.
