The pre-installed /etc/apt.preferences.d/00systemd
file prevents systemd from being “accidentally” installed.
So, unless you’ve AsRoot edited or deleted that file, you can set aside worrying about that possibility.

Hmm, doesn’t the thunar file manager have the ability to also manage the desktop?
Close any visible instances of thunar, then check the output of “sudo ps_mem.py” or htop
~~ if the output indicates “thunar –daemon” is running, maybe that daemon is grabbing control of the desktop icons and wallpaper?
