Ahem, ahem, are they not supposed to be backwards compatible by design?
Did someone messed up the internals of the modern USB (drivers included in?) so that it does not work.
Apparently so, because I checked multiple USB 3.0+ sticks and more than one did NOT work on the Thinkpad X201 while it DID work on the Thinkpad T14, but perhaps it is not the USB spec, it could be the vendor implementation; I’ve seen many times that hardware vendors deviate, even if only slightly, from the exact specification, so I would be LESS inclined to say that the forward and backward compatibility of the standard is incorrect and much more likely that many components, quite a few of which are utilized by most of the hardware vendors are not in 100% compliance with those standards.
I don’t know if companies like Dell, HP, Acer, and Lenovo are directly to blame or if it is actually the chip vendor(s) that provide the parts that provide the USB functionality are actually the ones failing to meet the spec. As just stated, I don’t know the ultimate answer; my suspicion is that the standard is NOT being followed 100%.
