I was using antiX-23 from hard drive.
I was trying to use usb-maker for creating a read-only USB of Linux-Mint. I was re-using a 64 GB USB having 2 partitions from antiX-23. It repeatedly crashed with an error message. After that, I found I couldn’t open a root terminal window. It couldn’t grant me the privileges.
Logging out didn’t fix it. Instead, it would accept my info, stream some code to the screen, and return to the login window. Eventually I conceded it simply wasn’t going to work, turning off the computer via the power switch.
I’ve tried rebooting, and it’s still the same. I’m locked out, unable to boot into the copy of antix-23 on the hard drive.
I used a “grub rescue” USB – but the problem is in the transition from login to x session. So, that didn’t help.
I booted into antiX-23 on a LIVE drive with persistence; a clone of what was previously working on the HD. That LIVE drive is what I’m using right now, to post this message.
I returned to the forum, and tried to delete a post I’d made, praising antiX-23, and criticizing a26. But, it wouldn’t let me delete it. So, I edited to wipe out the previous contents & title. Unfortunately, one of the gurus here had already read & replied to it during the short interval since I’d posted it.
I can’t get into the HD’s a23, to use inxi, for adding that info into this post.
I don’t know what to do, to fix this problem. Got any suggestions?

What did the error message say precisely?

That LIVE drive is what I’m using right now, to post this message.So, since you obviously wanted to repair your grub boot, have you now tried Boot Repair from antiX Control Centre, section Maintenance already, while running the Live session?

My a23 on HD was a regular installation, and so was the a23 LIVE drive – although the LIVE drive was made via snapshot of the HD, then using that snapshot ISO for makng the LIVE drive.
I only used the Grub rescue, because I didn’t realize where the problem was. I found out it isn’t in Grub. It’s in the boot sequence inside a23.
No, I hadn’t tried the Maintenance section from the USB’s Control Centre. Thank you for the useful suggestion. I’d had it in mind to reset Grub from within a23 after a26 screwed it up creating 8(?) entires for booting a26, and now that task should be finished. (I’ll find out, next time I try Grub…) BUT, as I said, I’ve figured out that the problem for the HD a23 is inside a23, not in Grub. It’s simply unable to proceed into the desktop from the login screen.
Today, I was able to mount the HD a23’s partition, using Gparted from the LIVE a23. So, I’ve got access to the HD a23’s files, for manually editing, if anyone much smarter than me can tell me what to do.

If I remember correctly, you complained about not finding the tools you were used to in the antiX Main Menu, you said you’d have to start them by directly entering into the “Run…” field instead in antiX 26. Which is not true: First. You’ll find them well sorted in antiX 26 Control Centre. All the duplicates have been removed by default from the overcrowded menus. So just open the Control Centre in antiX 26, and you’ll find therein all what you were after. Second. If you really want back your crowded menus, simply click Crowded Menus from the Applications → Settings menu. This will immediately restore in antiX 26 the former overcrowded menus from antiX 23, if you prefer to have it that way. (To revert, use Uncrowd Menus.) It is important to understand, that by default in antiX 26 the Control Centre is an integral part of the antiX Main Menu structure, and designed in a way that no duplicate entries show up in the Main Menu’s submenus. But you can crowd the Menus by a single click to get all the duplicates in Menu back.

As somebody else in the same thread had explained already, also this is easily managed in the antiX 26 Control Centre, section Inits: There is the Init-Manager, with which you can easily set, what entries should be displayed in your boot menu and what not. The entries are needed to be initially visible in antiX 26, to allow the user to boot into the init he wants. Each entry stands for another init system. Once booted and decided, he can/should configure it to his prevalence with the Init-Manager from Control Centre which I had mentioned. So the multiple entries are not a bug, it’s a (configurable) feature 🙂 You’d have known all this if you’d have read the antiX 26 announcement carefully:

The Control Centre allows to have the tools sorted logically into sections, while in Main Menu they always show up like Kraut and Rüben, depending on their accidental first character. Causing them to be shuffled around in the endless submenu listings, you find them in another place for each localisation… Which renders it extremely difficult to tell people where exactly to look for what. Additionally, In Control Centre, hoovering the mouse on an entry will bring up tooltips, explaining the basic meaning and usage of each entry. Something you can’t have in the Main Menu, at least not in IceWM.
So, I’ve got access to the HD a23’s files, for manually editing, if anyone much smarter than me can tell me what to do.
In antiX 26 Control Centre you’ll find in the Maintenance section the Chroot Rescue Scan tool (Not sure where to look it up in antiX 23, theoretically it should be present there somewhere in the Main Menu). I guess this is what you need to fix your issue. But sorry, from your description I have no clue what might be broken in your install. So please wait for others, who are more in the system startup management than I am.

Have you tried the min- sessions by pressing F1 at the slimski login screen? This should disable startup and any possible issues therein. Also trying the different window managers within the min- options would eliminate a possibility of one of the window managers being bad.
Beyond this check and maybe post the xorg log in /var/log/ as well as the desktop-session log in ~/.desktop-session/ for ideas

I dont have any different ideas on what to do to repair your install of a23 on your hdd.
BUT the quickest way to get back to normal may be to just boot into your live usb of a23, and reinstall it – since it is your cloned (ISO snapshot) of your previous install, it should have you back up in no time.
Good thing you made a backup!

😮 antixforum.com/search-forumsRobin, thank you VERY much, for all your assistance! You’re 100% correct, that I should have arrived here with much more information. Unforunately, I get impatient, and fail to write down all the error messages in a timely manner. It’s almost like optimism, believing that everything’s going to turn out all right… It’s definitely my fault, and I seem to be exhibiting that trait more frequently, lately. But. I failed to make proper notes, and so wasn’t prepared when the boot process broke.
I’ve made notes of all suggestions in this thread, for use when I attempt fixing a23. It was suggested that the quickest, easiest way would be to reinstall a23 from my snapshot Live drive. Yes, I can agree with that… But, what would I learn that way?
I think I’m going to start with the more difficult path, of attempting at least the chroot utility from a26. Then, if that isn’t sufficient, I’ll try to reinstall my snapshot.
I’m also going to take another try at a26 on HD, to see if I can make use of your excellent suggestions regarding the crowded menus and Control Centre. Again, I’ve made notes while here, in prep for doing that.
After I’ve had some time to monkey around with my computer, I’ll return and update you and everyone else.

Thank you, Christopher! Yes, I’m quite sure you’re right, about reinstalling the snapshot – but, what would I learn that way? So, I’m going to hold off reinstallation, until I’ve attempted the tactic recommended by Robon. (chroot). Then, if I can’t fix it with that, I’ll cave in and just reinstall.

Thanks, Steve! I didn’t come up with any fresh perspectives, during the time that’s passed. That’s partially because I undertook setting up an installation of Linux Mint in sda7. I achieved that, got it fully functional, and then turned my attention back to antiX issues in p1 and p3.
This machine is a Dell Optiplex 7440 with 8 GB RAM, running at 3.2 GHz. It has a 250 GB SSC inside. of which, about 236 GB are available after partitioning. My multiboot is set up as:
sda1 : 50 GB a23
sda2 : 20 GB swap
sda3 : 50 GB a26
sda4 : Extended
sda5 : 50 GB Ready but unused
sda6 : 1 GB EFI partition
(Mint wouldn’t install without it.)
sda7 : 63(?) GB Linux Mint v22.3I’ll come back and update this thread, as things change re. my antiX installlations.

I managed to use the chroot utility – but, that just left me staring at a command prompt, wondering what I was supposed to do next. There didn’t seem to be automation, in that…
So, I returned to the idea of reinstalling from the a23 snapshot live USB. (Tah-dah!) It worked without a hitch. I was surprised to see that it actually DID reinstall all my tweaks and extra software. (Yay!) This was so thorough, that my installation of Thunderbird survived being imported into the snapshot, written to USB, returned to HD – and, the user account is still functional for downloading email! THAT is just amazing.
The issue of the Grub installation was more resistant to repair, than fixing a23’s booting. I started out by using the Control Centre’s utilities – and, it just didn’t work. I finally found my solution via falling back to the command line in a terminal window; the traditional purge/reinstall worked. (I did this from within a26.) The only shortcoming, is that I ended up with 12(?) entires for a26, 3 entries for a23, and then 3 entries for Mint. But, the important point, is that it’s fully functional.
I was mildly surprised, and only slightly dismayed, seeing that the a23 installation now bears the name “1st snapshot” in Grub. Yup. Perspective. It’s fully functional.
Mint had trouble with this. At first, when booted, it threw up a recovery screen, and crashed upon exit. 2nd time, same thing. Recovery screen and crashed at exit. 3rd time, no recovery screen, but crashed at exit. 4th time no recovery screen, and no crashing during shutdown. From there, it was smooth sailing, and hasn’t crashed again.
One might wonder, why have I been messing with Mint? It was just exped
ience; the quickest path to a fully functional system; i.e., the perceived “path of least resistance”. And the 2nd objective was just that i’d been getting the bug to try Mint, as being something different; something to use all that extra internal drive space for.

It hits me, there is one other major glitch I’ve got in both a23 and a26; same glitch in both.
The installer has a design defect, involving the swap partition.
During custom formatting of the partitions, the installer asks if the user wants to format a swap partition – but only gives 2 options. 1) The user can assign space using a box for numeric entry of how much, or 2) Entirely skip formatting a swap partition.
In my case, I’d already partitioned and formatted a 20 GB swap partition, that I intend to share befween the OS’s on the multiboot drive. NEITHER OF THE INSTALLERS PROVIDES THE OPTION OF RE-USING AN EXISTING SWAP PARTITION.
So, both times, for a23 and a26, I chose the “skip” option. The fallout from this decision, is that neither of my current antiX installations has an active swap partition when they’re booted.
I can go into Gparted, and use “swapon” to make them active, but that doesn’t last through the next boot.
I made an entry in fstab for the swap partition – but both installations are ignoring that.
Here’s the contents of fstab from a26 (what I’m currently using):
