antiX-cli-cc got deleted from my core 26 when removing two alsa packages. Very inconvenient for a beginner. Package console-grid-gui provides it. Just FYI in case anyone else has the same problem. Google gave wrong answers and it took some time to find.

That’s probably why core is not recommended for beginners (unless they are willing to often learn the hard way); they are advised to start with full.

I made a full live usb from the download iso, using my core frugal install. Booted it on another PC with an ancient ATI Mach64 video card. Even with xorg=safe it gives me a garbled screen.
I tried upgrading my core partition with Xorg to see what happens, and startx fails too. The log says
Setting up VESA Mode 0x11A (1280 x 1024)
and then it crashes with a backtrace.Seems like it’s core or nothing on that PC. Unless there’s an Xorg guru in the house. Over my head.
I found an xserver package for ATI Mach64. Seems to load but still crashes.

@jcurtis, if you are still experimenting with Core, I’m not even sure Core has this package, but if not, it will eventually. I just changed the X server on two or three of my systems from using Xorg to using XLibre and it worked great (antiX 26).
If you are interested in continuing your experiments, then try this:
sudo apt update sudo apt install xlibreand let us know if that works for you.
If not, it may be a good time to try antiX 26 Full instead. That’s what I’m using and it has all the software I need, yet in spite of being called “Full” it is actually a very nice, efficient, lean system. The only reason it is called full is that in spite of the moderate size and footprint, it’s capable of being a full-featured every day system, but instead of some bloated desktop environment, it comes equipped with an efficient Window Manager called IceWM (or at your option, you can choose Fluxbox, JWM, or herbstluftwm). It’s really all you need. You may continue with Core if that’s what you want to do. Though I’m still capable of running Core (and I do have a recent USB drive with Core on it), I’m not inclined any more to set up and create my own custom system with it any more; you are welcome to do it, but I’d first recommend beginning with antiX Full, become well familiar with antiX and then venture off into customizing systems with Core; I’ll also add that it’s pretty easy to customize a system with antiX Full.

ATI Mach64 doesn’t crash now, but I still get a garbled screen. Log says ati module loads, but not mach64. Something missing or misconfigured. Over my head.

Then apt wants to remove all the xlibre packages. And I don’t see a package named xserver-xlibre-video-mach64 in core. Guess that’s the missing piece of the puzzle.

Dear @jcurtis,
The ATI Mach64 card is no longer really supported by recent versions of Debian (and therefore by antiX).
The drivers are obsolete and no longer work properly with modern kernels and Xorg.
For this kind of hardware, you need to use a much older distribution (for example Debian 7 or Debian 8), otherwise it will not work correctly.

You could ask the XLibre devs.

Right. It crashes with a backtrace. Google thinks Debian 13 broke it.
The same xlibre package does not crash. But it’s missing the mach64 module. I don’t maintain packages. Not one of my skills. IDK how much work it would be, but if anyone is willing to repackage mach64 from xorg to xlibre I will try it and see if it helps or not.
I’m not demanding. Just reporting what I find. I always have Windows 3.1 to fall back on.

IDK who they are or how to contact them. And I wouldn’t if I could. If word gets back to them through the grapevine, fine. If not, I can move along …
I booted 23.2 and the vesa driver worked. Guess something did break in Debian 13. I can use core for now.
