Since you’re using Pipewire, you should check what’s going on in Pavucontrol in the Output Devices tab. There may be some disconnect between ALSA and Pipewire.
In some cases, they will be in sync, but other times Pipewire can have completely separate volume/muting for a device. It just depends on the ALSA driver and alsa-ucm-conf for your card.
I also see that you installed PulseAudio. It’s not runing, so probably not causing any issues, but you should probably uninstall it just to avoid confusion. Pipewire-pulse replaces PulseAudio completely.
Maybe also post the output from
wpctl statusPreferably as a txt file or directly in your comment with code tags.

I have uninstalled pulse audio.
Using alsamixer the headphones are connected with the o setting when plugged in.
When not plugged in the PC speakers work fine.lgj100

Hi Jenko,
Have you tried using PAVU (pulseaudio volume control)? It works with Pipewire and might enable you to switch the output to the headphones, even when alsamixer doesen’t.

If you want to use ‘pavucontrol’ (originally for now superseeded pulseaudio) with ‘pipewire’, an additional package ‘pipewire-pulse’ should be installed.
sudo apt install pipewire pavucontrol pipewire-pulse
should install them all (‘sudo’ = run the command following it with elevated privileges, it requires password confirmation unless you’ve entered the password recently), if not already installed.rokytnji

My problem with headphones not working is only on my imac.
I have another old DEll Inspiron 6400 running the same antix software but the 32bit architecture and the headphones and speakers work fine.
The alsamixer looks the same on both devices both displaying headphones connected and both toggle between O & MSee attached file you requested.
Hi everyone and thanks for your help but i have now found a solution and headphone and PC speakers work fine.
I found the solution from a Linux Mint forum where a client had the same problem and MrEen fixed it.
