antiX makes nimble a d2200. It makes a big difference to have multiple networking choices and multiple browser choices on antiX iso.

not on persistent, this is it. sent up from the dell2200.

I got my screensaver text driver working to scroll data from text files, keyboard shortcut files, news feeds, weather forecasts, and such.

Its a screensaver that cycles around playing whatever programs or text files (or links to them) that I put in the folder.

One of these days I will type that todo list in…

Howdy Bob, Your screensaver idea is outstanding. Really like what you did. Haven’t implemented it yet but I sure am going to. Thank you for your hard work on this. Pretty sure it would be hard to walk into the tricks and tips section of antiX and not find something interesting to do:)

I got it working in English at least. Here is a crudely made video of the screen saver running with the wttr.in weather screen (that I had the problems getting the font right with) coming up in the sequence after about 20 seconds. The key to making that one work was to get the right font being used. I don’t know any languages other than English to be able to test if it works in other languages, but I got it working with a UTF-8 font. The IceWM keyboard shortcut help screens for keys and preferences come up after that, and automatically regenerate if you add or change the shortcuts. The screens and sequence are all configurable. In the real world I run it at a slower speed so I have time to read the screens.

Just saw this…sorry. I don’t do anything special…I just don’t let things run that I don’t need. A couple of simple examples: I don’t need a “network manager” sitting in my system tray using RAM when I can access it from the menu if I ever need it. I don’t need a power manager running and using RAM when I can stop screen blanking with xset. It may be less convenient, but it works for me.

Here is my Star Wars result.

I found I could use a single file in ~/xscreensaver/settings for what I needed. I just changed the xscreensaver path to the settings file and everything works. This makes it a bit easier to edit when in ~/home.
I still needed the getrss2txt file, but not the gen_sst file. I used sed to parse the moon stuff, and cat to read the total raw weather my conky generates. Because I like the fortunes package, I was delighted to find I could just add a line with “fortune” and it was picked up well by xscreensaver. Pointing to other txt files is a breeze.

I had problems when trying to add other rss sources. Don’t know why. The World News is good.
I liked all of the weather options available, and may switch to one of them in the future:)

To add a space line you just put a \n in the printf command. I think an echo automatically adds a line, but with printf you have to put it in yourself.

I am guessing that you are generating a file to feed to the crawler. Yes, I would think you could redirect output from my scripts to create it if you wanted, just like I use them to call from each of my rss feed scripts.
