andyproughMemberLooks cool. Can you tell us what Wayland packages you installed, including if you installed stuff like wlroots? And any dependencies you installed for Hyprland? I’m assuming you did the git clone and make install for Hyprland – did you run into any problems?

Member@andyprough Thanks for your feedback. To play it safe first I installed sway and its recomended pkgs through apt. Hyprland is built from git using my laptop running voidlinux.Just placed Hyprland and hyprctl bins in /usr/bin. Hyprland provides aspecific version of libwlroots.so to be placed in /usr/lib. vulkan-tools and libxcb-errors.so.0 are needed by hyprland. If we run Hyprland from tty it shows what pkgs it needs one by one. We can easily install those dependancies. I can not figure out libxcb-errors.so.0 file so I copied from voidlinux to /usr/lib. For sway you can install everything from apt.

andyproughMemberOh I see, so you did not try to build it directly on antiX? I agree that building it on Void and then copying the necessary files over makes a lot of sense, but I’m thinking that antiX should be able to build it. I’ll probably have to give it a try, this really interests me a lot.
How’s it working out for you in terms of finding enough software that will run on a Wayland-only machine? I know that the major browsers should be able to, and I assume that things like libreoffice and gimp should work, and I know mpv is supposed to work. What about PDF readers and torrent programs and various utilities like that? And what about synaptic – have you tried running synaptic to see if it would work with Wayland?

MemberPrebuilt binaries also available in hyprland github. You can try that first. Building quiet a few pkgs from git with my laptop so lot of lib files already available. Thats why I choose to build here. Since it is antix core it will need lot of build time dependancies but we can build with antix definitely. Just found that libxcb-errors.so I mentioned above is available with xcb-util-errors pkg. So we can install everything from repos. gcc12 and glibc-2.36 are mainly needed for running hyprland which are avilable in sid or testing repos only I think.
Qt apps run well. Im using qpdfview and transmission-qt. You can enable wayland in firefox. I didnt tried synaptic.

vitforlinuxMemberIt’s interesting, but the good old buttons for closing windows and the menu are still not visible… I hope we won’t always be forced to use two hands to make key combinations: many still use the mouse.
The developer of JGmenu created a new program to give an independent menu to Wayland:Trappist
Who knows what success a lighter than usual distro would have among Wayland and Sway lovers.

I never used Hyperland (or even tested Wayland) – but I think it includes a tiling windows mode and a floating windows mode. When tiling windows, no “good old buttons for closing windows” are seen- at least not on any window tiler that I ever saw…

vitforlinuxMemberIf Wayland is the future, other window managers will be brought to work on Wayland, and then there will be buttons to close windows… KDE’s Kwin or XFCE’s XFwm are already going there.

tlaloc77MemberInteresting!
Can anyone tell how it compares to X in terms of resource usage, I mean is it heavier or lighter than X?
(All I know is that the goal of Wayland was to get rid of X11 features no-one uses, so it should be lighter, but Wayland is very young…)
Edit: Hmm, no title bars at all. Maybe no big deal for terminal windows but I dearly miss a title bar in other cases.

Brian MasinickModeratorI would carefully research which organizations are involved in the work on Wayland before using it for any important work.
After reading about the horrible systemd defect I think our conservative overall approach and use of “aged” technology is wise. At least it is efficient and well tested.
We’re better off trailing in certain technology; we do have a fantastic approach toward USB technology and Frugal systems.

vitforlinuxMemberThey say it’s not good to dredge up topics after months… but I did some experiments with Labwc (openbox syntax, but on wayland) on SparkyLinux updated to SID.

And wrote a post about my experience on my blog unfortunately in Italian.

MemberDear
VictorVit – I just “skimmed” though your blog post. Being Portuguese, I got some of what you said. I tried the local Firefox translation tool and I was amazed of how well it translated between latin languages!
I really, really would like to see a step by step of how to run Wayland in antiX. I would love to try it on a virtual machine… and eventually on my real hardware, but my initial research showed me it was a bit out of my league…P.

vitforlinuxMemberDon’t try now… on debian SID is easy, but antiX+ SID + Virtual I don’t know if wayland works good.
Then I have a desktop in Xorg that helps me, consider that there is no real menu, and for example I don’t have a tool to do something like “GKSU” working.
My name is Vit, Vitforlinux is a bit like saying vitamins for Linux.
🙂

Brian MasinickModeratorDoes anyone have a “reference system” working that uses Wayland? I see the one that @vitforlinux put together; that one is on Sid. Are there any common, every day distributions that include Wayland by default? If so, do any of them use a common window manager, such as the IceWM that we feature? My guess is that Plasma or GNOME are likely to have the early implementations. I’d like to see some stable, every day kind of distribution featuring it before we consider making it anything other than a personal respin that people share.

MemberDoes anyone have a “reference system” working that uses Wayland?
I was using Debian 12 Bookworm as such reference system, which has Wayland as default if I remember correctly. It also has Xwayland for those apps that are not yet native to Wayland. I have Wayland antiX, but it is using Labwc as WM and Lxpanel, not IceWM. This does not mean IceWM is not working, just that I have not tried, because my primary antiX X version is Openbox based.
As reference system, Debian 12 Bookworm/Wayland is Gnome based.Live antiX Boot Options (Previously posted by Xecure):
