      Hello everyone,

Why do the sub-menus often default to English in antiX 26 Full 64-bit sysVinit?
Do I need to add a command to the startup file to fix this issue?
I have to use the ‘Refresh Menu’ option far too often to get everything back in French.
Is there no possibility of an update to fix this bug?

      Best,
      Wallon

How long did you wait before clicking on the sub-menu?
If user immediately clicks on the sub-menu as soon as they see the ‘desktop’, then I can reproduce the ‘bug’.

          Dear @anticapitalista,

As you can see on my Conky in French in the screenshot, the time since boot-up is 1 hour, 12 minutes and 25 seconds.

I’d say I clicked on the sub-menus roughly 60 minutes after booting up.

When I launch antiX, I don’t click on anything and wait for the sound icon to appear in the taskbar at the bottom. I also wait before clicking on the menu until my Conky no longer shows any activity for the read and write speeds on my device. It’s a USB 3.1 stick which has a read speed of 150 MB/s according to Conky.

So, honestly, I don’t think this is down to my device being slow. Nor can it be down to the CPU, as it’s a fully-fledged i5-8350U!

            I’ll blame … XLibre 🙂
Seriously though, did you have this issue before installing XLibre or any other apps?
These bugs are very difficult to fix as they are so random and there doesn’t seem to be any pattern to them.

@Wallon – I just installed to Virtualbox – set to fr_BE and sysVinit and on the very first boot after install I see this issue.
Subsequent reboots, sub-menus are in French at every boot and all inits and all window manager setups.

              Your conky is different.
You have also stopped showing the flag on the toolbar.

Could any of the above affect the sub-menus? I wouldn’t think so, but you never know.

Just noticed you are using zzzFM and JWM

My devices are slow, even single core 32 bit, and here everything works as expected. So it can’t impossibly be a question of a device or CPU being too slow, like you suggested.

It’s a USB 3.1 stick which has a read speed of 150 MB/s according to Conky.

Then maybe it’s because your device is too fast and processes things parallelised: JWM renders the menu, before the .desktop files have been processed completely? Since I have never observed this in IceWM on runit, which doesn’t require an explicit restart command for updating the menu after changing the entries, I looked into the desktop-menu code; for JWM actually an explicit restart is needed and applied, which might come prematurely for some reason. The command is defined in ‘/usr/share/desktop-menu/templates/jwm.template’ and executed by desktop-menu (via reading the template into ‘Var’ and executing ‘Var.Restart_Command’) after the menu has been built.

                1.) Try:

                $ jwm -restart

If this already restores the menu translation, @Wallon, we are on the right trace.

2.) Try running IceWM instead of JWM and let us know whether the issue persists.

If not: Where is the desktop-menu execution hooked in the live system so it creates the menus in the needed localisation when booting up antiX Live? Would be worth to look whether the JWM restart command can’t be executed for some reason in this position, maybe because the menus are built before JWM has completed its initial startup, and thus refuses to restart simply, and completing with processing the English menus instead.

3.) Try runit instead of sysvinit. Any changes in behaviour?

Are you serious with these questions?
You’ve got to appreciate the humour of the new chatbot installed by the antiX forum admins.
It’s obvious: XLibre starts up twice as fast as Xorg. So what?
What’s wrong with my Conky? It provides valuable information in real time and in French.
For users who don’t know yet, @fehlix has already explained that in antiX and MX Linux, the flag no longer appears in the taskbar if only one keyboard is installed on the system. I don’t change my keyboard every other day!

Sorry for my quick replies, but I’m not used to answering a chatbot.

                      Lieber @Robin,

The issue arose when we added the new desktop files containing the programme names in English, including brackets and quotation marks. We didn’t experience this issue in antiX 23 or during the testing phases of antiX 25 and 25 RC1…
What is curious is that even when I reboot my system, the sub-menus always revert to English.
                      1) I start up with zzz-JWM. I wait a minute and click on [Applications], and very often it is in English.
                      2) I switch desktops and select [zzz-IceWM], and the sub-menus are also in English.
                      3) I switch desktops and select [zzz-Fluxbox], and the sub-menus are also in English.
                      4) I switch desktops and select [zzz-JWM] again, and the sub-menus are also in English.

No, the command [jwm -restart] doesn’t change the situation; the sub-menus remain in English.

The only solution is to go to the main menu and select the [Refresh Menu] option. It seems this is the only way to force antiX to re-read the desktop files in the language defined by the [locales] variables.

I haven’t tested this with the other [init] options yet.

                      Mit freundlichen Grüßen,
                      Wallon

                        Dear @anticapitalista,

I did see your message :-).

But Belgians are known for having a great sense of humour.

All the stars and celebrities who come to perform in Belgium say that Belgians don’t take themselves too seriously.

I hope you enjoyed my reply? It was a good idea, this chatbot, after all.

                        Warm regards,

I restarted my laptop with runit and the zzz-JWM desktop. It hasn’t made any difference; the sub-menus are still in English.

That changes things. Thanks for this important piece of information. Explains why I have never seen that behaviour. From your former issue description I had the impression that it happens in Live mode, since on an traditional install neither the .desktop files nor the links, and also not the menu description files ever should get replaced by other languages once set up initially. They are static in a traditional install, if I’m not mistaken. So the antiX desktop files package shouldn’t be involved here, and also not the menu generator script desktop-menu.

Since I don’t have any traditional install, I can’t check in detail what could behind this. Did anybody else ran into something similar? Is there something specific in your install? (Maybe something like a drive where the menu-links go to not ready in time) ? Or is there something overwriting ‘/usr/share/desktop-menu/.jwm/menu-applications’ ? Please check the content of this file before and after reboot, when you see the English menus. Is the content of this file properly translated? And if not, it should be after you ran the refresh menu. Then find out, why this doesn’t survive a reboot on your device. Also check whether the symlink ~.jwm/menu-applications points to the aforementioned place.
