Best approach to backup before upgrade from 21 to 23

Glad you provided this reminder; I’ve stated this numerous times when describing the proper procedure. If any component doesn’t work, the whole approach becomes risky business!

I’m ashamed to admit that I learned that the hard way, myself.

One time I made major changes WITHOUT backing up first and trashed it. Another time I did make the backup, but the USB had errors, and was corrupt. Luckily neither of those was with my main system, but I try to REMEMBER WELL THE FAILURES, so as to never repeat them.

And yes, it’s worth typing a few more sentences if it avoids that pain for anyone…

I’ve done worse than that @BobC, but at least I had multiple ways to correct it.

I have two or three systems that have multiple boot configurations.
One day I completely wiped out one of them.
I thought, “Oh well, good that it happened now, because I needed
to reorganize this system anyway”.

Nevertheless it took at least two hours to install and configure those systems!

(Obviously, off the thread topic of upgrade rather than fresh install)

So, for a fresh install, if I understand things (Call this antiX for dummies <g>):

(a) backup data files so that you can copy them back after install,

(b) make a list of installed packages, so anything not routinely included in the automagic install process can be added.

(c) install a live version on a usb drive

(d) boot from that live version to confirm that it works on the target computer

(d) decide on any partition changes that will be implemented as part of the install

(e) perform the install after booting the live usb

(f) boot and test the new install. If functioning ok,

(g) update and upgrade or full-upgrade

(h) add desired packages not included in the “routine” install

(I haven’t done a fresh (re)install recently. I will start an install to reread what the installer asks in the next day or so…)

From this thread (thanks for raising) there are multiple methods to backup the original system in case something goes wrong and there is a need to restore.
However, taking your objective of system upgrade from a different perspective, would this make sense to consider such upgrade directly to antiX 25, which hopefully around the corner? You must have taken such possibility into consideration, but to point out, antiX 23 is based on Bookworm, which is already history, replaced by Trixie, which is now current.
So, considering your upgrade plan is a significant undertaking, not casually executed, would such effort be more beneficial to be spent on such upgrade to antiX 25/Trixie?
Just an idea, not meant to influence your judgement…

P.S.
I am running antiX/Trixie now (not antiX 25, since we have just alpha and the final antiX 25 will have more when it comes out), and I am quite satisfied with stability and performance, not speaking of much of software being of much newer versions…

Hi olsztyn,

As a permanent noobie, I have heard warnings about NOT trying to jump over intermediate versions. So, if the repos allow, I would consider an upgrade from 21 to 23, but not directly from 21 to 25. Unless, there is a clearly established (safe <g>) way that is spelled out on the forum.

Of course, if I do a “fresh” install, installing antiX-25 when it is available is the way to go.

I think 21 to 23 should be Ok. I haven’t had time to work with 25 yet, myself.

If you’ve made lots of changes and installed lots of packages, your B and H steps could get crazy like mine did. That was why I wrote my scripts.

However you do this, I strongly suggest you find a way to do a test run somehow, without making changes on your main system. That is the safe way.

Hi BobC,

Thanks for comments. The 21 system is a “backup” computer of sorts (a Lenovo education Yoga model) with limited but quite adequate capabilities. My “main” system is running antiX-23, upgraded from 21/22.

As I indicated in some posts, I intend to go step-by-step, cautiously, testing at each step, after backing up everything that might get mucked up on the Linux side.

Sounds like you have the mentality right.

Got an extra disk drive you can swap in to test with? That’s the safest if its an easy swap.
