Hiyall,
I am running antiX21-runit-base-64 in a VirtualBox. When I boot into the GRUB, it tells me that I can load EITHER the top one (antiX21-runit-base-64) OR scroll down to ‘boot from hard disk’. I want to boot from hard disk because I have made extensive changes that I want to keep. How do I do this automatically?No matter what I change, I can’t get the date/time to save correctly.

So, I read that as you are saying you are booting this live CD in virtualbox. On the live boot menu it also offers for you to boot from hard drive.
If that’s how you are using this in virtualbox (live), then the “booting from hard drive” probably wont have an OS (unless you put one there).
Perhaps you would want to install it to the virtualbox virtual hdd?
Or am I reading this wrong?

I am booting into VirtualBox with an iso that I downloaded from antiX. It’s not live, it’s an iso that I stored on my laptop’s HDD.christophe
Ok. So you are using virtualbox.
Now, the way you are using it with the antiX virtual cd, is that you need to “install” it in virtualbox.
Otherwise it is just a virtualized live cd.Install antiX into a virtual machine, then you will be able to update, add software, etc.

It is installed.I CAN update but once it has finished updating, it becomes inoperable.

Message I used updater and it installed successfully (as it always did). I rebooted and once again see GRUB which gives me same 2 alternatives; see screenshot1. I choose hard disk.
I then go to Software Installer and click on DeaDBeeF. It looks like it is installing including a brief terminal session. I then reboot and look in Apps/Multimedia. Deadbeef isn’t there. I checked ALL the other folders and it’s nowhere. I then go to the Deadbeef site and download the .deb. If it’s installed in virtualbox, why are you booting from the live-cd? (That is, I would think you’d remove the virtual cd from the virtual cd-drive – and boot from the virtual hdd.)
Also, when you say “inoperable,” please describe that in as much detail as possible. We need to know much more to help. 🙂

Peter, I added your post above that got trapped by the spam checker due to your ISP being suspect.
It seems to me that you are not using the combination of virtualbox and antiX correctly. I think Christophe is saying the same thing.
I think what you need to do is install antiX to a Virtualbox virtual hard drive, then reboot it from the vdd, then update it and then install deadbeef. The changes would be saved in the vdd and when you shut it down and reboot from the vdd later, it should be there.
Christophe, I don’t use virtualbox much, so please correct me if anything I said there was incorrect, or not the best way to go about it.

The thing to remember, Peter, is to remove that antiX cd from the virtual cd-drive after you install it to the virtual hard drive. Otherwise, you end up booting the live cd again & again. The live cd acts like an installed system, but nothing gets saved…. So: boot from it once (& install), then “eject” it. Then the virtual hdd will virtually boot. And then everything is saved, like a real installed system, but on virtualbox.
You remove the virtual cd from the toolbar at the top (in windowed mode) – Devices – Optical Drives – Remove disc from optical drive.
Better yet, shut down the virtual machine, and remove the disc in the settings window, prior to rebooting the virtual machine.- This reply was modified 4 years ago by christophe.

I’m still having problems with setting up VB.
Attached are screenshots of the Win which works perfectly and antiX which doesn’t load. They look the same. Also attached is “Storage” which I’m sure where my problem is.

I don’t know what’s wrong…
But maybe try this: Make an antiX VM with the IDE storage connector, not SATA. Mine are made that way, and they just work.
Maybe try a 32-bit VM; it will probably default to IDE that way.

Ok, I reproduced the whole thing and had no problems.
1. I created a new machine in VB, named antiX21baseX64USB. It was a lousy choice of names. Better would have been antiX21runitbaseX64
2. I had to tell it where to put the files (2nd pic), Next,
3. I told it to use 1024 mb of memory, Next
4. I told it to create a virtual hard disk now, Create
5. I told it to create the hard disk as a VDI type (default), Next
6. I told it to use Dynamically allocated storage, Next
7. I gave it 8 gb, Create
8. Click Settings button, Click Storage tab, Click CD-ROM Icon, Click CD-ROM Icon again, Click little CD-ROM Icon with + sign on far right to bring up options, Click Choose a Disk file, and you will need to point it to your antiX ISO file and Click Open button. (3rd pic)
9. Click Start button
10. antiX boots to ISO file (just like if you booted from the USB), I took the default boot
11. Run the antiX installer from the desktop
12. Install antiX to the Virtual Hard drive, I took the default and installed to entire 8 gb VDI
13. Complete install, user id/password stuff etc, took defaults or obvious choices, ok to reboot at end
14. Reboots to ISO file (just like if you booted from the USB). Choose Boot from Hard disk from the boot menu
15. Login user id/password
16. When toolbar comes up go to antiX >> Applications >> antiX >> antiX Updater. Say Y to update and then press enter for defaults on any questions
17. Menu antiX >> Terminal
18. type: sudo apt install deadbeef (Enter your user password if asked, type a Y if it asks to confirm)
19. Menu antiX >> Applications >> Multimedia >> Deadbeef
20. Menu Logout >> Shutdown
21. Click Virtualbox Settings button, Click System Tab, Click Motherboard tab, Click Hard Disk, Click arrow up until its at the top (4th pic), then click Ok
22. Click Start button, it should boot from VDI hard drive with Deadbeef installed
23. Menu antiX >> Applications >> Multimedia >> Deadbeef (to verify Deadbeff is still installed and working)Attachments:

Hmmm, no reply… I think why what you were doing didn’t work was because you were just running the ISO file, and every time you would shut it down and reboot it, everything would revert back to what was in the ISO.
BTW, a good way to get the right date/time is to get the current date/time from the internet.
Menu >> Control Centre >> System tab >> Set date and time
If you setup the system the way I showed above, and change the date/time to come from the internet, it should be set correctly as long as you have an internet connection.
