Happy new year and a hopefully better 2022 for everyone!
I have a strange problem: After changing the ~/Desktop folder, the applications are not visible on the desktop (see screenshot).
Yes, sir, I rebooted.
Any idea what’s going on?

With the Rox ‘desktop’ (the one you are using), just drag and drop that desktop file to the ‘desktop’

Otherwise if you would like to use ~/Desktop change to a zzz-/space- session. (menu -> desktop -> other desktops or f1 at the login screen)Computers are like air conditioners. They work fine until you start opening Windows. ~Author Unknown

Yes, this is one of the things that gets confusing in antiX until you get used to it. There are actually several “Desktop” environments that antiX can be set to and they don’t all use the same techniques. Rox is a little different than space and zzz, etc. And this is all done with Window Managers and File Managers and other tools that are scripted to create the “Desktop” environment, without using a DE (“Desktop Environment” like XFCE or KDE, etc.) It keeps things light but is a little harder to understand at first.

.desktopfiles from/usr/share/applicationsto the desktop space is really simple (once you know it.. ????).

That may work with rox. Does this create a link icon on the desktop to the applications file?
I am trying to learn how to use zzz. Drag/drop seems not to work for this purpose with zzz – zzz has another way. Knowing where the “applications”.desktop files are located was the missing ingredient for me anyhow. Thanks for /usr/share/applications. With zzz one can right-click the .desktop file and choose New -> Link and figure out how to use the resulting dialog. To create a link/shortcut on the desktop I think the command line with ln -s is more accessible to me.

Can it beat this? Something like this with lotsa tabs: start urxvt
cd Desktop; ls -C /usr/share/applications; #let’s pick one ;ln -s <esc> <.>chro <tab> #etc expand to “chromium.desktop” with tab; <enter>

You know BobC that I actually finally get around to following your suggestions. Takes a while to understand them, but I do. Like the trick of making a tiny .jpg file of some colour, slipping it to /usr/share/wallpaper and choosing it as the background image with the control center wallpaper utility for a big stretch. I did not know what you were talking about after just installing antiX

Distro: antiX-21_386-full Grup Yorum 31 October 2021I’m glad it helped. A pic is much easier to make sense of than a list of directions, and what’s better than that is a marked up pic WITH the directions on it.
The enhanced screenshot utility I use to make them never made it to the distro, but it really does the job for someone trying to help with support because people can SEE what to do and what the results should look like.
