we don’t know why or when … never imagined repo mirrors were so volatile
Please consider, many of the mirrors are managed by (often pretty unexperienced) student helpers (HiWi) at universities, and the quality of service depends on many factors. Frequently during vacation there are no people caring for these, for example, simply because nobody is present. This is merely one of the possible reasons why mirrors fail for some time unexpectedly and recover later (in my example: once next term starts).
Windows is like a submarine. Open a window and serious problems will start.

They all start off as reliable, but sometimes (we don’t know why or when) they become unreliable, then reliable again.

In my area repos are not usually unreliable; nevertheless from time to time there are issues. I’d been using one repo for quite a while and noticed it wasn’t picking up the latest updates recently. It may be lacking support right now. I switched to another on that had provided good service for a long time, but I had also switched away from it because it was malfunctioning at one point, so these things CAN happen. On the positive side, I’ve used many different repos successfully for years and years. Find the right one and that could be the case for you too.
