Exceptional performance and optimization of antiX 26 on Asus EeePC 1215P – A comprehensive study
Reference Hardware: Asus EeePC 1215P (Year 2011)
Reference Engineer: Alfio96
Object of the Study: Multimedia optimization and resource efficiency on an Intel Atom processorINTRODUCTION AND DISTRIBUTION PHILOSOPHY
High-level software developers, when creating a new Linux distribution oriented toward the recovery of historical hardware, modify and lock configuration files with a specific goal: to achieve the best possible compromise between operational simplicity, flexibility, and lightweight performance.Other modern distributions abandon this challenge, targeting much more powerful hardware and wasting resources on superfluous visual animations.
antiX 26 adopts a drastic philosophy: it removes heavy automated background services (called daemons) that constantly monitor the system and consume RAM, relying instead on fixed and essential configurations.
This approach allows a 2011 netbook to return to a new life, provided that the user knows how to calibrate and optimize the individual gears of the system.
1. DESKTOP INTEGRATION: CONKY AND COMPOSITOR
The stock resource monitor (Conky) was initially relocated and configured on the right side of the screen to leave the left area completely free for desktop icons.
Visual Effects and Smoke-Transparent Look
To avoid the “black background” effect and provide an elegant appearance, the lightweight compositor xcompmgr was activated. The instruction was added to the IceWM startup script (~/.desktop-session/startup):
xcompmgr -c &
Inside the .conkyrc configuration file, the graphical parameters were modified to enable a native smoke transparency at 20% opacity (value 80 on an ARGB scale):own_window yes own_window_transparent no own_window_argb_visual yes own_window_argb_value 80 own_window_type normal own_window_hints undecorated,sticky,skip_taskbar,skip_pager alignment top_rightManual Toggles Management (wmctrl)
By default, Conky is rendered on the desktop background and gets covered by application windows. To give the user total visual control without wasting RAM on automated tracking, the wmctrl package was installed to create true manual keyboard shortcuts.
The following key combinations were mapped inside the ~/.icewm/keys file:
Ctrl + Alt + W → Forces Conky into the foreground on top of every window (wmctrl -r “conky” -b add, above).
Ctrl + Alt + S → Returns Conky to rest on the desktop background (wmctrl -r “conky” -b remove, above).
To synchronize the Intel Atom processor timing during boot, a sleeping automation line was added to the startup script (commented out with a hash # to be activated by choice), calibrated with a 7-second delay to give the graphics layer enough time to load before sending the foreground command:
(sleep 7 && wmctrl -r "conky" -b add,above) &2. FILE REGISTRY STUDY: MIME TYPES
In computer science and operating systems, the acronym MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) represents the universal language used by the computer to catalog file formats. It is an invisible label that tells the system what a specific document contains (e.g., text/html for web pages, image/jpeg for photos).
The hidden file ~/.config/mimeapps.list, under the [Default Applications] section, is the official registry where the computer maps each MIME label to its respective application.
During the browser coexistence experiment between Firefox ESR and Falkon, the 5 key protocol lines were modified:
text/html=firefox-esr.desktop;org.kde.falkon.desktop; x-scheme-handler/http=firefox-esr.desktop;org.kde.falkon.desktop; x-scheme-handler/https=firefox-esr.desktop;org.kde.falkon.desktop; x-scheme-handler/about=firefox-esr.desktop;org.kde.falkon.desktop; x-scheme-handler/unknown=firefox-esr.desktop;org.kde.falkon.desktop;This modification automatically generated the quick index file mimeinfo.cache.
The experiment scientifically demonstrated the rigidity of the antiX 26 graphical script: the interface does not handle dynamic cascade menus, but exclusively reads the very first application listed before the semicolon.
However, the developers included a flexible workaround called the Free Choice button.
This button opens a direct window to the /usr/share/applications directory, allowing the user to manually select the org.kde.falkon.desktop profile and update the browser picker without editing the deep text configuration files of the system.
3. BROWSER ANALYSIS AND BEHAVIOR ON YOUTUBE
To test the response of the rendering engines, a comparative study was conducted using the browser on the official Formula 1 video “Race Highlights | 2023 Azerbaijan Grand Prix”.
Falkon: It uses the modern QtWebEngine/Chromium engine. It displays extraordinarily sharp and crisp images because it sends the frames to the screen without smoothing filters. However, lacking native optimization for compressed codecs on legacy hardware, it saturates the CPU at 95%, making the video choppy and full of frustrating micro-stutters. In the past, on old SolydXK systems, Falkon (which was called QupZilla) performed exceptionally well because it used the QtWebKit engine, which was extremely lightweight but is now obsolete for modern websites.
Firefox ESR: It possesses a much more mature video stream management. It applies an imperceptible pixel smoothing filter (slightly less sharp than Falkon) but distributes the processing load efficiently, keeping the CPU between 70% and 85%. The video playback remains smooth and continuous. With the addition of the Enhanced-h264ify extension, which forces YouTube to send only the lightweight H264 format while blocking heavy VP9/AV1 codecs, the eco-compatible Firefox ESR stands out as the absolute winner for daily browser usage.
4. THE MULTIMEDIA POWERHOUSE: BENCHMARK ON SMPLAYER
To completely eliminate the friction and resource overhead of web browser pages, the SMPlayer media player was installed.
Structurally, SMPlayer does not represent a standalone player, but represents the ideal graphical cockpit—equipped with convenient menus, buttons, and visual adjustments—specifically designed to pilot the internal mpv video engine and the yt-dlp link extraction tool.
By isolating the raw streaming video feed and excluding heavy web page scripts, SMPlayer drastically reduces software friction, communicating directly with the graphics drivers of the antiX 26 motherboard.
Using the same 2023 Baku GP video, three rigorous full-screen scientific tests were conducted to map the physical limits of the Intel Atom processor:

TEST 1
General: Multimedia engine-Other Network: Support file videosites-Other or Internal YouTube support ; Preferred quality- Best video and audio ; Playback quality-720p ; Use 60 fps Test results: RAM: 280MB-350MB CPU: 65%-85% Visual Output: Very smooth, excellent sharpness, CPU does not show distress anyway, full screenTEST 2
General: Multimedia engine-Other Network: Support file videosites-mpv ; Preferred quality-480p ; no adaptive streams, no fps Test results: RAM: 250MB-300MB CPU: 45%-50% Visual Output: Good fluidity, good sharpness, CPU in optimal conditions, full screenTEST 3
General: Multimedia engine-Other Network: Support file videosites-mpv ; Preferred quality-720p ; no adaptive streams, no fps Test results: RAM: 300MB CPU: 100%, max Visual Output: Unwatchable! Choppy video and CPU collapsing, full screen🧠 Core Technical Observations
The Smart Default (Test 1): The distribution’s default setup is beautifully calibrated. By letting the internal player negotiate container streams with YouTube, it achieves high sharpness at 720p while keeping the CPU under the 85% ceiling, preventing thermal throttling.
The Eco-Mode (Test 2): Forcing mpv at 480p cuts the CPU load down to a staggering 45-50%. This is an invaluable setting for hot summer days or when saving battery, keeping the Intel Atom completely relaxed.
The Hardware Ceiling (Test 3): Forcing a raw 720p stream without adaptive container processing pushes the CPU to a flat 100%. This mathematically proves that the Intel Atom cannot process uncompressed HD streams without modern hardware acceleration, making the Default configuration or the 480p profile the only viable choices.
5. AUDIO ARCHITECTURE, SYSTEM TOOLS, AND KEYBOARD
antiX 26 adopts PipeWire as its default sound server, backed by the low-level ALSA kernel architecture. During extreme 100% CPU calculation spikes (as seen in Test 3), the audio server can suffer from micro-buffer freezes, locking the Control Center interface and triggering the error message “The client Gtkdialog with PID 933 is not responding”.
The ideal resolution lies within the graphical toggle provided by the developers in the Audio tab: clicking Disable PipeWire and immediately followed by Enable PipeWire forces a clean restart of the daemon and clears any hung audio channels.
Startup Services Optimization (SysVinit)
Through the service management grid in the Control Center, a thorough cleanup of unnecessary services was performed to reclaim RAM. The grid displays the numeric columns of the Runlevels (Execution states: 0 halt, 1/S single-user emergency, 2,3,4,5 standard graphical multi-user, 6 reboot) and the tilde symbol ~ (indicating a conditional service, dormant until triggered by specific events).
cups Service (Printing): Successfully removed the X markers from the standard multi-user columns (2,3,4,5), using the Q key to save. The printer overhead has been permanently eliminated from the boot sequence.
bluetooth Service: Intentionally left active with its original X markers, as it is vital to ensure that the Bluetooth wireless mouse pairs instantly and automatically at every system startup.
Keyboard Volume Mapping
The physical keys on the Asus keyboard combined with the Fn button to adjust the sound do not broadcast software signals that SMPlayer can intercept, as they operate at an internal electrical hardware level. Furthermore, assigning the standalone F11 or F12 keys would conflict with universal application commands (e.g., F11 for full-screen mode in Firefox).
The engineering workaround involved introducing protected dual-key shortcuts within the ~/.icewm/keys file, hooking them directly to the underlying hardware levels of ALSA:
key "Ctrl+F11" amixer set Master 5%- key "Ctrl+F12" amixer set Master 5%+This configuration grants the user fluid, unrestricted, real (0 to 100%), and dynamic volume control natively from the keyboard during full-screen media playback, without causing applications to cross-talk or trigger unintended window adjustments.
GENERAL CONCLUSION
This methodical study proves that antiX 26 represents a true miracle for digital preservation and electronic waste (e-waste) reduction. A fifteen-year-old netbook, when configured with correct driver logic, precise codec targeting (H264 at 480p), and manual resource allocation (via wmctrl and IceWM keys), ceases to be an obsolete object and transforms into an extraordinarily fast, snappy, capable, and modern multimedia machine.
