Yes, I’ve tried it and it works well. I haven’t dug deep enough into the details to determine if it’s a great alternative to Ungoogled Chromium but I have verified that it works fine by using it for several hours multiple times with my typical workload and it passes that test, so it’s definitely usable for routine use, at least for me.

I haave been using it almost exclusively for a month or two. Running non-stop on my wife’s music player as well.
Works great for me, effectively prevents adds and keeps memory footprint and cpu steady low, not letting adds eat memory until exhaustion.
          Great one in my opinion.

Excellent, glad to read that it’s been great for you. I’ll give it some more extensive testing then; it’s been good for me so far too. Do you think it’s worth considering to add to our Web Browser collection?

I decided to add the Helium AppImage to my latest Beta 2 test of antiX 25; installed it and I’m running it here now.
It’s working just as well here as it was on my main antiX configuration.

Helium browser is UngoogledChromium with UBlock and a bit of lipstick..

uBlock Origin, made possible by the browser’s preservation of Manifest V2.

They did not preserve manifest V2, the UngoogledChromium project was doing that first along with Vivaldi

I’m sorry that doesn’t work out for you @xunzi_23. Of course you’re aware that both the Ungoogled Chromium and the Librewolf efforts are also available, and in your case they’re probably better for you. In my case I’m not concerned about any “big brother” US stuff taking place. I’ve been well protected by both the local and federal officials and also the financial services communities. Recently I was scammed and lost some money and compromised information. My local police department was very helpful, and I was in contact with a senior director of a credit union in Michigan. The Credit Union protection https://ncua.gov/ (NCUA) insured my account and 100% returned all lost funds.

I moved all of my credit union assets local so that if any such thing ever happens again I can physically go to the institution and get an even faster resolution; this had NOTHING to do with computer systems or software; I was scammed by a device connected to a local gas pump of all things. I just use a credit rather than debit card and avoid the pumps closest to the outside, lessening the likelihood of a repeat event; that’s only the second time in my entire life that I’ve had assets threatened; in BOTH cases it was from local stores; both cases the local police departments were instrumental in getting a solution; the first time the officer happened to be a personal friend of mine and he personally took on my case; the most recent instance our local officers were every bit as helpful. I’m sorry for those who do not have positive experiences with authorities; not every authority has the best interests of their community; where I live, we have excellent people all around us.

Also in my story above NONE of the issues have ever been with a browser; it’s always been at some local business. However, the local businesses have been very cooperative and in both cases have quickly improved their protections; I expect that to regularly continue.

For those outside of the USA you can decide if Helium, Firefox ESR, Ungoogled Chromium or some other tool works best for you; the one thing we all can appreciate here is that with FREELY AVAILABLE software we have many choices and each of us can choose what is either most convenient or what works best for our specific needs and interests. @olsztyn and I happen to be appreciating Helium at the moment.

I think that @blur13 is also interested in Helium, is that right?

I am glad your experience with this browser is also positive, if I understand.
Whether to add to browser options in antiX I think it would be entirely up to management decision (I think you are a part of it). I am OK either way.
For my own use I just pick whatever I think is the best working for me.

@olsztyn I’m not a part of “management decisions”, though I’m among the veteran team moderators and a long time user and tester. My personal preference would be to add either Ungoogled Chromium or Helium to our collection of browsers, but it’s not a “must have”, it’s merely a preference. A few of the browsers in our current collection of Web Browsers in our software installer hold no personal interest on my part, but again I’m using the word “personal”; that’s all it is for me, and I don’t get all bothered if not all personal preferences are there; I enjoy the occasional challenge of digging them out and doing them myself, whereas a newbie really needs all the help they can get for what they use, so I gladly defer my own preferences to those who benefit from the simplest tools that we offer, so that’s my actual stance; I’d much rather do a few things each release to make it a bit easier to bring people on board, while continuing to provide a lean, efficient, well designed overall distribution; the one thing I appreciate is a balance of tools that give preference to older systems, with a few concessions so we can run some reasonably current generation equipment too; that’s something that wouldn’t be unique to just me, therefore the reason why I suggest it.

“Obviously you have no problem with that.”

Yes, this is off topic, and just because I’ve been well protected from my small matters doesn’t mean that there isn’t good and bad here, and in every corner of the earth for that matter.

When it pertains to the current leadership of my country, I don’t understand why so many people voted for that person again. I certainly did not and that individual gives a very poor representation of what many fine people represent. For instance, when I spoke of local and federal officials, I spoke about the ones that do sincerely care and I was referring mostly to those who aide others, particularly senior citizens when it comes to matters such as financial fraud. The local officers and the credit union management were the primary people I was able to witness first hand, but it wasn’t the first time I’ve seen their helpful behavior; I also witness it in our communities.

It is the extremely wealthy people (and not all of them either) that grab power and seek more, regardless of the impact it has on the people around them. There are some, however, who live comparatively ordinary lives and use their earnings to fund major humanitarian efforts – those individuals are not very common because power and greed has overtaken what may have at one time been a desire to be kind, caring, and sharing toward other people.

Back to the browsers, Ungoogled Chromium just had another release update and it’s very good, as usual. Quick seat of the pants observation is that it’s still the quickest out of all of the full-featured Web Browsers out there, but the “lipstick” Helium is reasonably close and it’s slightly easier to obtain, configure and run. The point for me is that just because something is produced and made available from the USA does not deter me from using it. I also have nothing to hide, so there’s no worry about what might be potentially captured. As long as the cache and configuration are lean and secure, I’m not concerned about telemetry and what might be evaluated about browsing habits.

Off topic, on elections, we had terrible choices in the US in 2024. My district was gerrymandered, so my vote no longer counts at all. Even without that, all candidates were totally unsatisfactory. We went from one corrupt regime bankrupting us to benefit one herd of pigs at the trough to another even more outwardly corrupt regime bankrupting us for the benefit of a different herd of pigs.

Off topic, on gas station crimes, I always go inside to pay, which I assume is safest, and only use credit cards, but on the reader scanning issue, I thought I read that if you insert the card instead of tapping, it was secure from external scanners. Was that correct?

On browsers, does Helium support syncing of data? I worry about the security of saved passwords. Any thoughts on that subject?

Hi BobC, you can always sync data like open tabs and history but not passwords. In firefox I have “Ask to save passwords” unchecked and instead use KeePassXC to store passwords locally in an encrypted file (which I then share across my computers without “the Cloud”).

the KeePassXC looks like an interesting project .
I was looking for such a safe method to save my passwords .

You’re most welcome @anticapitalX. It’s also found in the Package Installer in the “Misc” group. It’s still called “KeepassX”, but it actually installs KeePassXC (I’m looking at my antiX 23 system – not sure if it’s been updated in the Beta).

According to “apt show keypassx” the “keepassx” package is now “a transitional package to install the keepassxc package” because “the original keepassx does not receive any further development.”
