how to invoke IceWM ?

One of my pcs has misbehaved, and fails to invoke IceWM following a normal boot. Instead I get a login invitation, but when I log in I have no idea how to get IceWM running.

How can I resolve this difficulty short of a fresh install?

Hi roland,
I would start by reinstalling ICEWM then if needed copying over files from a working setup home,
start with
.desktop-session
.icewm

As you can give no detail just guessing, you may need to do more.

On occasion I have moved complete home setup to a broken system succesfully.

Not entirely sure what is your problem.

1) You can log in and you get into another desktop?
Slimski allows to change currently selected desktop environments by pressing F1.

2) When trying to log in with IceWM selected, it pulls you back to login screen.
Can you get into IceWM-minimal (that I believe is present for testing purposes, ignoring user’s configuration)?

I once messed up my configuration for ‘fluxbox’ and I failed to log in into that desktop but others, including ‘fluxbox-minimal’ worked fine.
The advise by @Xunzi_23 is a good one.
Also, there are default configuration files in ‘/etc/skel/’.

3) Is it non-functioning auto-login?

4) Something else.

Definitely not enough info given here, but it sounds like possibly you’re not getting slimski at all and the “login invitation” you mentioned is the tty text-mode login.

If so, you might be able to start icewm with

startx /usr/local/bin/desktop-session icewm

and you’ll want to look into what’s wrong with the slimski service, e.g.

service slimski status

or

sudo service slimski start

etc.
