My scanner isn’t being found, but antiX knows it’s there..

I have attached a screen shot of what’s happening. It sees the scanner fine in lsusb, but doesn’t think its a scanner? The Mustek scanner says it is compatible with xsane in linux, so it shouldn’t be a driver problem. I am in the scanner and lp group for permission sake. I know there’s a .conf file for the scanner, but I tried ajdusting that too, but no dice so far.

I even tried Vuscan, a commercial software co. that has linux drivers for the Mustek scanner. But they got back to me and said this scanner only works with the WIA service in windows. Not a big worry though, since this pc dual boots Windows XP (where it works fine) and now antiX. oh well, I tried…

Yes, Mustek has built series of scanners which are “Windows only”. Shame on them. Don’t buy such rubbish… so just book it under the account “Lessen learned”.
Luckily my Mustek scanner is found and initialised immediately in Linux, but only after running the SCSI tool from antiX Control Centre, section Hardware. Maybe this is worth a try for you also, since many of their USB- and Parallelport-scanners are internally SCSI models with a translated port.

Windows is like a submarine. Open a window and serious problems will start.

But I have no idea; I once used ‘cups’ to manully find a printer and manually provided a best-match PPD file (which I downloaded from a seemingly reliable source) and it worked.

Thx, Robin, I did try the SCSI tool in the control centre. The thing with this scanner is I used it heavily from 2015-2020. It’s a large format A3 scanner. I have it hooked up to the Windows XP machine (which is the only thing I used the computer for.) I got the scanner cheap on Ebay. But lately I added antiX to this PC. I put it on its own 500 GB ssd, that I broke into two partitions (not counting the boot one) for “/” and “/home”. This PC has a core 2 duo CPU, but only 2 GB of RAM. However with antiX, is runs super! Even Firefox works great. So antiX revived this PC altogether. And since the scanner is still connected to it, I thought I would try to get it working. I had another scanner once, that I used to have on my other Windows XP pc (that one has antiX alone, no dual booting –but because it has a Pentium, it is pretty slow, at least for web browsing.) anyhoo, that was another Windows only scanner. I might still have it around somewhere. I don’t remember what I did with it. But this large format scanner is a good one, and I can still boot into Windows XP and use it when/if needed. But I appreciate your suggestions!

Thx sybok! I always value anything you say. I tried those links. My scanner is the large format A3 one called the Mustek A3 1200 Pro. My final hope was with Vuescan –a German company that has proprietary Linux software for a truckload of various scanners. I contacted them about my scanner after discovering even their software was unable to detect my scanner, and the owner of the company responded very promptly and said there wasn’t really anyway to get the scanner working in Linux because it depended on Windows. He said:

Unfortunately, it only works with this scanner on Windows with a WIA scanner driver installed for it.

They have Windows versions of the scanner software too. It was a beautiful piece of software too! I would have bought it had it worked.
