Wouldn’t it be provisionally possible to
post version 7.0.26 back to the package
installer until a suitable solution is
found for the new Oracle VirtualBox?It is present in the package installer of
antiX 23.2. It is no longer supported by
Oracle, but it works perfectly with the
antiX kernel 6.6.119.Above see a link from a thread (MX forum),
where today’s difficulties are well
described.Greetings

sybokMemberI guess you’d better ask at MX Linux as they provide VirtualBox.
When was VirtualBox 7.0.26 present?
The version I see installed in my antiX systems are the followin:
antiX 23-ish: 7.0.18-dfsg-1~mx23+1;
antiX 26: 7.2.2-dfsg-2~mx25+1April 1, 2026 at 7:55 am #200350stevesr0
MemberThe MX post indicated that the problem was the kernel selection at boot time. If a kernel was selected (from the grub advanced menu item) at boot time to run MX (and presumably antiX) that VirtualBox was equipped for it would work. For a kernel that wasn’t “preinstalled” in VirtualBox, you needed to have the kernel headers installed on your system for that kernel in order for VirtualBox to work with that kernel.
(If my summary is unclear, reread the MX thread.)

MemberHi 032_hsn,
I have to apologize for my inability to write something coherent and meaningful in any “nonEnglish” language. Plus, I don’t claim that what I write in English is meaningful.
Given that, I feel like summarizing my understanding of your problem, as follows:
You cannot launch the current VirtualBox that is available in antiX-26.
If that is correct, the solution offered on MX might work for you.
I believe that solution was to install additional kernel image and kernel header packages in VirtualBox that would allow it to run within an operating system running that SAME kernel.
As a permanent noobie, I am aware that my ignorance may be causing me to suggest something completely irrelevant (or I am still missing the point of your problem).

MemberI just used synaptic to install the 4 packages (& their dependencies) in my screenshot.
I’ve had to manually start the vboxdrv kernel module prior to launching my vm by running
sudo modprobe vboxdrv
This could be automated using rc-local service for each init.Main system options I used for my VM can also be seen in screenshot (I’ve used Win11 as my starting template – I often install Win11 to dual boot with linux to test things in VM’s)

MemberThe antiX-26 packaged version works just fine for me
For me too. Actually, if installing using apt-get on console on antiX 26 full 64 bit (even in Live mode or frugal), it is sufficient to run:
$ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get install virtualbox virtualbox-qtAll the other needed packages will be drawn in as dependencies automatically then already. Just make sure you have installed the header files for all your installed kernels (in particular the one you are currently running on), so the virtualbox dkms module can be built when installing virtualbox.
While it installs and comes up fine basically, I ran into some quirks.
1.) On my machine, when starting the qt-GUI, the window exceeds the monitors borders (1152×864px) and can’t be shrinked nor resized for some strange reason. wtf? You have to force-move this window around by Alt+F7 to get to the lower end of the text and the buttons, causing the window head vanish beyond the upper monitor border. Trying to change the display font size for virtualbox in its settings from the File menu fails: The OK button is greyed out since some path is decried to be missing. No idea how to fix all that.
2.) Important: You need to add your user to the vbox group in antiX Control Centre → section Maintenance → User Management, therein Tab »Group membership« and then relogin.
3.) The up to date virtualbox package version is missing in the repos of the 32 bit version. So you currently can’t install a recent Virtualbox on these. Instead you’ll have to build it from sources (which I had no time to figure out how to do unfortunately: The build instructions given by Oracle for Linux seem to be misleading wrong, at least in important parts, and don’t work, while they expect you to install a >2GiB FONTS package!? wtf? why? That’s more fonts than you can use even when formatting each single character of this program GUI individually. Resource wasting at its best, rendering the preliminaries of their build process difficult on a Live system running on merely 2 GiB RAM: This package won’t install, and can only be convinced by applying some magic in the end: Adding symlinks for the folders where it wants to extract to, pointing to the live-usb-storage where some free GiB can take all that instead of going into RAM.) Would be great if we could have this version packaged for 32 bit as well like it is for 64 bit, by somebody who is familiar with handling brewing from sources. If not: I have no idea how many months it will take until I’ll have figured how to build that successfully in my limited spare time, but I’ll not resign. Virtualbox has worked on former antiX versions perfectly fine on 32 bit single core CPUs.
Windows is like a submarine. Open a window and serious problems will start.

Member@ProwlerGr & @robin,
thank you for your feedback. – I try
to present the translations for the
forum better. Write small letters and
use simple phrases in german,
hopefully there will be fewer mistakes.I wanted to reply something like
this…”I’m not feeling well”, as
others would have done. → But I was
very surprised, you both answered me
‘to the point’. Thank you for your
seriousness, hopefully it will continue
with us normally.Question: guys, if it could be anchored
in the package-installer as a source,
why isn’t it there? … I clarify. → My
thread is actually from the fact that I
complained, the virtualbox 7.2.2 can
not be installed in antiX 26 without
additional settings. Just as it should
be. = This is important.Just my secondary opinions:
1) I install only my own snapshots in
VM (not Windovs 11),
2) with Synaptic I would rather not
do it, but with the terminal, is easier,
3) @robin: I still do it the old way.
I give the command:
‘sudo adduser (name) vboxusers’ in the
terminal. You can go on like this,
right?April 2, 2026 at 4:17 pm #200558032_hsn

$ sudo apt-get update
$ apt list --installed | grep linux-headers linux-headers-5.10.199-antix.1-amd64-smp/bookworm,now 5.10.199-antix.1-amd64-smp-1 amd64 [installiert] linux-headers-6.12.57+deb12-amd64/oldstable-backports,now 6.12.57-1~bpo12+1 amd64 [installiert] linux-headers-6.12.57+deb12-common/oldstable-backports,oldstable-backports,now 6.12.57-1~bpo12+1 all [Installiert,automatisch] linux-headers-6.6.101-antix.1-amd64-smp/bookworm,now 6.6.101-antix.1-1 amd64 [installiert] linux-headers-6.6.119-antix.1-amd64-smp/bookworm,now 6.6.119-antix.1-1 amd64 [installiert] linux-headers-6.6.13+bpo-common/now 6.6.13-1~bpo12+1 all [Installiert,lokal] $ apt list --installed | grep linux-image linux-image-5.10.199-antix.1-amd64-smp/bookworm,now 5.10.199-antix.1-amd64-smp-1 amd64 [installiert] linux-image-6.12.57+deb12-amd64/oldstable-backports,now 6.12.57-1~bpo12+1 amd64 [installiert] linux-image-6.6.101-antix.1-amd64-smp/bookworm,now 6.6.101-antix.1-1 amd64 [installiert] linux-image-6.6.119-antix.1-amd64-smp/bookworm,now 6.6.119-antix.1-1 amd64 [installiert](Diese hier stammt aber von einem antiX 23, doch auf antiX 26 ist daran bis auf die Paketquellen nichts anders.)
Dein aktueller Kernel ist also 6.6.119-antix.1-amd64-smp.
(translates to: Are you actually able to provide a terminal command that contains EVERYTHING needed to install the stupid VirtualBox 7.2.2?)
Sure, this is not really difficult, once you’ve mastered the console at least a bit. Please be patient, I’ll gather this together as soon I’ve a bit spare time for this. Most likely other users also can profit from a way to do all what is needed in one go. (Indeed it’ll be a series of commands, which must be run consecutively; but one can write them as well on a single line, like a huge confusing mess, then at least it looks like a single command 😉 But really, the Package Installer from antiX Control Centre, section Software, is expected to execute precisely all that automatically. It may be necessary to make some adjustments therein so that it works smoothly again as expected.
Desktop: Xfce4, Init: Dinit
I can merely give you advice for the process on a virgin antiX 26 full Live USB, booted into the defaults (runit, zzz-IceWM). Possibly Xfce4 needs some extra treatment, possibly Dinit likewise. This will have to find out others. It should be insignificant, which kernel you use. For checking out, whether this works for you basically, please try the following in console, which is what I’d do if I’d be in front of this antiX 26 PC:
– [Short introduction into apt management and kernel header install]
– [Repeated in structured order the already given advice for virtualbox install, gathered from several postings by me and others from this thread, to form a complete overview of the full process which can be followed step by step.]
If I have missed out some step, please correct my.
And please add the possibly still needed instructions for Xfce4 and Dinit.Windows is like a submarine. Open a window and serious problems will start.
