Just a thought, not a mandate. How about removing the Base iso as an offering, AND removing Libre-Office from Full.

More than once I advise friends to START out with Full, not Base, because they think that merely due to iso-size, it is more “lightweight” in operation.

And sometimes, we are on different pages when it comes to “antiX doesn’t do X” like yours does. 🙂

How about a half-way point – remove Base, and remove Libre-Office from Full. Now there is only one gui-selectable version, and the iso size is reduced for that “lightweight” feel based solely on iso-size.

The user of course can add Libre-Office if they want to afterwards. And of course make their own re-spin of that with an iso-snapshot and live-usb followup. At least we’re all starting from the same page more or less. Online vids showing how lightweight antiX is go straight to the browser anyway. Or if they do call up Libre-Office, they aren’t actually DOING anything with the empty spreadsheet. 🙂

Just a proposal, not a criticism.

        100% against that idea.

Sorry Pdp-8 You assume that a windoze refugee or other newcomer to Linux can automagically adapt in minutes, install an important package which is the de facto standard over most distros, live remaster, something most users will never have heard of let alone understand at first.

I can from experience assure you they will find the full version unusable, call antiX shit then install Mint or worse for them buntu.

Over the course of the last 10 years or so I have not met or assisted a user that did not need LibreOffice, at a minimum Writer but most have also used Calc a lot

The antiX respin I have spread around is much more than full, gimp plus plugins, darktable, Blender, Scribus, Librewolf, UngoogledChromium, Vivaldi for government services
etc are all or in part essential for many Scholars and Students.

antiX full is a good, reasonably lightweight, starting point and IMHO Must be kept that way.

I second you. This is what I had thought immedialy when reading the original proposal.

While actually many (most) users hitting the board with newbie questions seem to have chosen base instead of full, so the idea of either dropping base, or at least explicitly state, that this base is meant for experienced users who are able to deal with obstacles like missing firmware, drivers or tools on their own.

much more than full, gimp plus plugins, darktable, Blender, Scribus, Librewolf, UngoogledChromium, Vivaldi for government services
etc are all or in part essential

This is precisely what I also do with antiX full on each next major version upgrade also, when remastering my personal standard USB Boot device for live usage. I have a really long listing of tools and programs I add by default, this takes much time until everything is set up finally. And I guess that is what most users will do: personalising their antiX full by adding programs and tools for whatever needs. antiX full is a good base for starting.

Let’s wait for people advocating for base, since there may exist a need for this flavour, even when I can’t see it: The days, when even base could fit on a CD medium are long gone. So, what’s the use of base nowadays? Users, experienced enough to tailor their system from base and make it work without stumbling over missing drivers, are also able to easily purge whatever they don’t need from full…

So the same time I second this part of the original proposal:

More than once I advise friends to START out with Full, not Base, because they think that merely due to iso-size, it is more “lightweight” in operation.

From my experience and findings antiX full works fine even on really old hardware, e.g. on my 21 years old 32 bit single core notebook with 2 GiB RAM merely, absolutely fast, fluent and lightwight.

Windows is like a submarine. Open a window and serious problems will start.

I use basic, with something removed, something changed, and something added.

I must say that I would not complain if there was only full … but as long as there was a button “transform into a base version”.

Thinking of going from Win 10 to antiX without being a minimum annoyed I think it is impossible.

Many Windows users think Linux is the free version of Windows … and they are very surprised when they find that it is not, and it is different, then we are surprising them!

Sorry for my spaghetti english, i'm italian. Happy XORG user. GNOME? No thanks!

As a relatively nontechnical long-term user of Linux and antiX, I have installed versions starting with net and full on different systems.

A net install allows someone the ability to start with the minimal set of programs, if they wish.

A full install is (in my view) light enough for most and includes the tools most moving from Windows want. I do agree that tools for dealing with images (such as gimp) might be a common addition. (I installed it for a course, but tend to use imagemagick for my simple needs.). I don’t know how commonly video editing packages are used.

Core, which adds wifi capabilities to net, was unnecessary for me, because I have Ethernet access. (Brian Masinick mentioned, I believe, that his community only provides access by wifi.)

I have no experience with base. Perhaps a poll to check how many have needed base would be suggestive. Conversely, feedback about the reduction in workload by eliminating base might be illuminating.

@stevesr0 There is definitely value in each variation of antiX. These days I only need Full, but having used all of them at one time or another, I appreciate their value.

I always say that it’s up to the distribution owners to build whatever they want and I maintain that.

I don’t run base/ So when questions come up.
                  I pretty much ignore em.
Just the way I am I guess.

antiX-base (c1.2GB) – 4 windows managers – IceWM (default), fluxbox, jwm and herbstluftwm.
Suitable for those who want to customise what to install.

up to the user to figure things out in my book.

NOTE: I moved the Base script discussion over to:

Script to add or remove from Full or Base
