Anybody tried runit-run on an existing Sid install?
I understand that this enables use of runit on an existing Sid install that has sysvinit as its init.
(Asking this, because I understand sysvinit is being likely being phased out and I don’t know whether upgrades in packages will be incompatible with an old sysvinit installed.)

I’s likely to be around for many years to come.Just to add that there are more likely to be potential issues for antiX-sid runit users down the line as we transition to using ProwlerGR’s runit-service scripts (using runit syntax) over my runit-core scripts that are sysVinit type scripts.
The result will be an even purer runit set-up to what we have presently.Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

Our change at antiX is simply that we will no longer produce syVinit live media (iso files).

Also I noticed that sysVinit has package updates in 2023 and 2024, so it is getting occasional changes, and if they are minor that is good.
I have two sysVinit images and they continue to work fine.

Debian is not interested in alternative inits to systemd, despite their claims otherwise.

So antiX way or ProwlerGR way it is the right way. As mentioned in another thread, antiX will transition to ProwlerGR way of runit, totally independent from sysvinit. As sysvinit will be out, I am looking forward to the most pure and most natural and independent runit implementation.
Hopefully dinit and s6-rc will be the two other viable options.

The antiX core runit scripts were not dependent on sysVinit being installed. They were independent.
The only connection to sysVinit was in the style of the script.
ProwlerGR and abc-nix took a further step (in different ways) to make such core scripts use a ‘runit’ style syntax.
ProwlerGR has gone further by changing his s6 ‘core’ scripts that also had sysVinit syntax to ones now using s6 syntax.
Dinit and s6-66 on antiX have always used the upstream syntax.Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

I thank everyone, from @Xecure and @abc-nix, for their roles and assistance in developing and updating the techniques and methods. Special thanks to you and @ProwlerGR for further advancements to ensure both syntax consistency and current technology to continue a lean, efficient way to produce our systems.
When we were testing the init-diversity tools and methods, I did notice some improvements in syntax and consistency, which would appear to be maintained and improved as we move closer to the next release. Such details are not immediately obvious, but the detailed information reports did reveal important trade-offs between functionality, memory utilization and multiprocessor performance. The sysVinit method has always been memory efficient, but as we know, has not taken best advantage of multiple processors at start up time. For example, I noticed dinit traded off rapid process initiation for slightly greater initial memory use, a very fair trade-off with modern technology; it was still quite efficient despite using a few additional MB.

I was able to convert the antix-25.a1 to a full init-diversity spin using the script I posted here, chances are it could be adapted to work on a current sid installation (with all precautions for a full backup & restore if something goes wrong).
However a few things will have changed in sid since that release, & as @anticapitalista mentioned the runit version I have packaged & use in the init-diversity spin is a bit different to the official antiX implementation for stage1 services, but all main stage2 service scripts that have been developed by @anticapitalista @abc-nix @Xecure and all other developers during the course of the past few years, work just a fine in both runit implementations.
