The forum is “owned” by @anticapitalista. Who “Hosts” or donates the forum is a different matter; this forum has been hosted in several different places over the years.

The US was not created to protect or defend anyone but Americans and the US. I don’t understand, given the debt it has buried us under, why the world expects the US to pay for defending them both in dollars and blood. It’s obvious we cannot.

I’m not going to stand up for the dictatorial/facist like attitude and actions which seem un-American to me. The peoples reactions to them are showing up in the polls, so I just hope its temporary. If nothing else, hopefully someone worth voting for will step up and be elected next time.

I’m not even sure why this tread is here. The people here are from around the world. I wouldn’t call antiX American software, or this an American forum. I’m not here to argue politics. I hear enough of it on TV and podcasts.

          I couldn’t agree more.
We come to antiX forum and the Linux world to focus on development, programming, and doing useful work—not to get caught up in politics.
This is a global community built around open-source software and technical collaboration. Let’s keep it that way.

Let's accept antiX as it is

            Hi 032_hsn,

My view (warning- likely to seem very unrealistic – sorry about that)

Unfortunately, humans have not figured out how to sustain harmonious societies.

I believe that a hundred years from now, we will have done so and brought them into existence.

            Speaking only of the U.S.,

I perceive our society (and governance) as problematic because of this lack.

            Specifically,

            (1) We have an overwhelming percentage of voters who (a) accept the de facto two party (non)system as the way it is “spossed” to be and partially as a consequence vote NOT on the basis of careful consideration of critical issues, but instead on the basis of either party affiliation or the relative “charisma” of the two candidates,

            (2) Generally we have a winner take all system in elections (where voters vote for one candidate), which discourages candidates and parties from sensibly addressing critical issues, (rather than a system where voters would score all candidates),

As a consequence, advertisements have an ENORMOUS impact on many voters, some who feel like victims, others holding negative feelings towards those with different beliefs, skin colors, or personal lifestyles.

To my mind, wars, dictators, oligarchs and wars are symbols of our inability to rear our children to get along sensibly and realistically with each other.

Hard to fix in the short term.

Only to add that the post is in the kafeneio section of the forum where politics is allowed as long as it conforms to our code of conduct.

Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

This IS the “In a Greek kafeneio” thread, the ONE place where political opinions and even “civil” arguments can take place, PROVIDED, as both @anticapitalista and I have mentioned, follow and adhere to forum policies. Name calling, attacking individuals in the forum are grounds for forum dismissal; stay away from such behavior and political discussions ARE welcome, but only in the Cafe section.

One true statement regarding political leaders in most countries that I’m aware of, including the USA, is that to get very far, (past small town politics in the area where I live), is to have a LOT of money and power. These days, a millionaire is not enough; you have to be at least a billionaire or a trillionaire!

The only possible exception is a violent, murderous takeover, but even that requires quite a bit of money, even in relatively poor countries, so traitor Trump is not at all unique; he’s just a mouthy person that only blind “party” followers or fellow billionaires like or actually “follow”.

                    @BobC

The US was not created to protect or defend anyone but Americans and the US.

It is most likely a common misunderstanding as the USA was sometimes presented to me as an upholder of democracy, truth, justice and as an example to strive for.
Good to have it stated plainly without any obscuring.
It therefore is not “Truth, justice and the American way” but “Truth, justice the American way”.

I don’t understand, given the debt it has buried us under, why the world expects the US to pay for defending them both in dollars and blood.

The aforementioned presentation I encountered helped to set up the sentiment and expectations.

It seems to me you say USA were – by design – never meant to do that but USA did it anyway and it cost you a lot.
Then, are you sure USA tried to protect the world and not merely USA’s interest (while using the latter disguised in the form of the former as it gave a higher moral ground)?
What is your point of view on that?

BTW, I do not deny that some NATO members did not pay 2% GDP as agreed (shame on us!) and Kudos to D.T. correcting this.

                    It’s obvious we cannot.

Cannot or does not want to do so (anymore, if it ever truly did)?
You could try with a varying degree of success.

                    @032_hsn:

usa as a world leader Since WW2

Among the at least 248 armed conflicts that occurred in 153 regions of the world,

201 were initiated by the United States, during those war milions of persons,
                      old young, chindren were killed.
                      Millions displaced, they became refugees.

Support for genocide in Gaza, Warships in front of Venezuela.
Boats being destroyed in violation of international law.

No financial or other unpaid support for Ukraine since January 2025 at least.
                      Only sales through third partys.

For purchases trump takes “Handling Fees” where do they go, where does money and property
from those persons ICE took off the streets go.

President running in fear of putins power: controlled by Russia, Putin now openly speaks before
media about his agent Krasnov being trump.

Back to now. No Blame on previous presidents for the havoc.

A big Budget Deficit was mentioned in favour of the orange painted oligarch trump.

So where is the money, Billionaires like Faschist Musk, Bezos, Allison Cook Gates
and others of their ilk. pay no taxes on wealth.

Massive gov contracts are given to those persons.

Tourism, a big source of revenue gone. Only a lunatic or fellow faschistic trump supporter
                      would visit usa.

ICE, violent morons marauding in military styled uniforms dissapearing people at a whim
get paid at leas double the rate of teachers or other essential persons.

The white house is being filled with gold tand at taxpayers costs.

Trump is extracting billions from the us economy and transferring the monesy to himself,
family and those who pay him tribute. Bribes in real english.

Huge numbers of persons have lost their jobs, previously they payed taxes were able to
purchase goods, now many are hungry and live in fear day and night.

Side note, the two main posters from usa live in a bubble of relative wealth and security,
go downtown and talk to real people, discuss affairs on mastodon instead of taking the cool
aid from Fox New York Times X CBS and the many other other truth distorting institutions.

remember media is a disinformation platform. Mastodon is populated by some influencers but
those promoting faschism, surveillance and anti diversity policys are not welcome.
As a distributed network it is not as prone to censorship and pressure as other systems, it
is also not owned by usa.

Reality is harsh and fearsome, look it in the face. Change it,,,

Usually talking politics goes nowhere. Either you are in an echo chamber and everyone agrees with you or, if you are talking to someone that disagrees with you, almost no one ever ends up changing their minds.

That said – The fact that parts of the world (mostly Western Europe) used to look to the US as a kind of “World Cop” is due to the politics that came to be after WW2 – it went something like this: we, Europeans don’t spend a fortune building military factories and weapons and a F***ing huge and well armed Army because we agree to buy all the military supplies to you (USA) and instead of having well equipped military bases, we allow you (USA) to have military bases all over our territories, including nuclear weapons and subs, fly your military missions all over us, use your spy satellites all over us, wiretap all our comms, etc, etc…
… In exchange, we (Western Europe) are almost fully dependent on your (USA) military aid.

That’s a business arrangement that lasted decades. Until now. Now Western Europe looks to the other side of the Atlantic and sees no help coming (but plenty of military supplies being sold from over there to us).
Political alliances change all the time. The one between Europe and USA has been changing for some 10 months. That’s nothing inherently wrong with that… other than the fact that Europe was caught with our collective pants down, regretting to have put most of our eggs on one basket.
I was mostly pleased with the old status quo: USA spent fortunes on military and Europe spent fortunes elsewhere, like… hum… you know… universal healthcare, unemployment benefices for everyone and stuff like that. Now that spending with “welfare state” will decrease and go straight the the military…

                        EDIT:
A bit off topic but with line with the previous post:
Like the US, Europe had problems with (illegal) emigration.
I found nothing wrong with creating a huge walled fence protecting a country’s border. It’s a bit primitive and a huge expense of money, but it’s a choice.
I found no problem at all with sending the military to increase protection of said border (assuming the Law allows for that to happen) – hell if the people in charge of a country think the border requires more security and decide to provide that extra security, I’m all for that.
I still find no problem, in general with having police officers checking a person emigration status and if that person is illegally in that country, starting the process to remove that person from said country.
I DO find lots of problems with going to the courts where those people are finalizing their legalization status procedure and arresting them before they do so. That’s not what someone that’s in good faith would do.
I do not find any problem with using brute force to remove illegal criminal gang members out of the country. I DO find problems with treating a hardworking person working at a field picking fruit or at a factory or selling stuff in the street as if they are violent criminals. Even if 10% of an immigrant population was criminal, that does not justify treating the other 90% of (innocent and hard working and productive) people as if their are criminals. Using masked unidentified paramilitary force to randomly and violently pick people of the street (or from inside their cars or homes) and ship them, without due court process to a gulag in a foreign country is a big steaming pile of stinking crap.
NOTE: I’m aware that crossing the border illegally is a crime in USA. It’s not a crime in Portugal (and I think in most, if not all, other EU countries). It’s something like a civil offense here – you have to pay a fine and are given time to get out/ claim asylum/ etc. If you don’t get out voluntarily (or legalize your situation), the cops will force you to get out – in theory that’s a pretty good system… In theory, at least (I know that system from the inside now – it’s where I work).

                        P.

JFK’s to be delivered remark, 1963/11/22:

[…] it should be clear by now that a nation can be no stronger abroad than she is at home. Only an America which practices what it preaches about equal rights and social justice will be respected by those whose choice affects our future. Only an America which has fully educated its citizens is fully capable of tackling the complex problems and perceiving the hidden dangers of the world in which we live. And only an America which is growing and prospering economically can sustain the worldwide defenses of freedom, while demonstrating to all concerned the opportunities of our system and society.
