Recently, I’ve heard Irish-themed Honeyfeet + Rioghnach Connolly and I discovered an oldie but goodie – Sam Cooke.

This morning I woke up with a melody on my mind, and when I thought about it, the song was “Through the Eyes of Love”. Originally popularized by Melissa Manchester for a movie, the one I was thinking of was an absolutely fantastic trombone solo I’d heard some time ago.

Anyway, first I found the Melissa Manchester rendition, which many of you, if you’re used to “popular music” with singing, may prefer:

By the way, if you want to hear how truly high a tenor trombone can be played, Dave Steinmeyer can hit notes as high as many trumpet players play, except that he has a really nice, smooth tone as he plays the melody in “Through the Eyes of Love”. If you don’t want to listen to all of it but you want to hear the super high “screetch” notes, scroll to near the end; he does the melody one last time, but at the very end, he goes up to the practical high note that only the finest trombone players can do well; Dave does a beautiful job, retaining perfect control, even as he navigates the upper register of the instrument.
