antiX-25.a1-full for testers

I ran antiX 25 a1 Live, updated it and noticed that the lack if icon in IceWM Manager GUI seems to be solved. I used it for some 90 minutes, navigating the Web and noticed no problems.
As I mentioned before, I do think that the new apt interface does make antiX Updater look much more funcional and better looking. I think most people that don’t use the terminal won’t even notice that they are looking at a terminal command running…

I have, for now, nothing more to add to what I mentioned before…

As I mentioned in another thread, I’ve done more testing with two variations of antiX 25 Alpha 1 – the provided Full Runit version and the @ProwlerGr antiX 25 Alpha 1 Init Diversity. Both work in similar ways, with only the previously identified missing features. Everything I use for my own routine, however, works perfectly, so both are usable systems for me, ones that I’ve used many times for several hours at a time.

Customize Look and Feel does not fully apply. Running alpha 1 as is, no upgrades. Running from a live-usb stick with static root persistence.
tldr: when applying a user changed font in this window, and hits apply, it does not do a FULL job.

It seems that if one navigates through the Control Centre > Desktop > Customize Look and Feel > Default Font, and changes the font size and hits APPLY it *only* immediately changes the font size and window size of the Customize Look and Feel window itself. However previously, this used to ALSO change the font and window size of the antiX Control Center window from which it launched. Ie, I’m more concerned that the application itself, and not the tool, is the only one to get the change. 🙂

This might go unnoticed if one launches Customize Look and Feel directly from the menu structure and changes font there.

Note: yeah buddy, I saw the latest busybox in there! Runit and the 6.6 kernel are doing well on this relatively modern box.

It is also possible I’ve had too much caffeine. A1 is very pleasing.

I downloaded it over the weekend and installed it yesterday. So far I can’t see any difference between this new release and any of the standard ones – it’s all working well, except that yesterday it shut down and rebooted itself for no obvious reason (although other distros I have on my hard drive, such as Endeavour and MX, also do that so I’m not blaming that on antiX).

Hi Colonel Panic, shutdown reboots is not normal, as the issue
is seen with other OS as well as antiX it is likely hardware related.

Please check if you have firmware-misc-nonfree and if needed
intel-microcode package installed.

The problem is often overheating, occasionally BIOS battery low.

Thanks, it’s an old computer (circa 2012) so what you say about the BIOS battery makes sense. I’ll look to see if the packages you mention are missing as well.

Please excuse my ignorance. In this post, everyone speaks of antiX 25. Is there a 24 version of antiX? In this post, it was suggested that antiX 24 was named 25 because it is released in 2025, is that it?

Thanks for that additional clarification @Robin. Regarding any antiX 24 there was not, to my knowledge, any announcement or intent of an antiX 24, just as there was no announcement or intent of an MX Linux 24 and the reason matches what I at least intended to say. Debian did not produce a major release in 2024. Bookworm was released in 2023. Trixie will be released on August 9, 2025, so whatever antiX or MX Linux produce will be a 25 release based on Trixie. Minor updates .1, .2 or however many come out, will be 25.1, 25.2, etc. until another major release; the next major release will be named in whatever year another major release is created.

@Robin Recently I started experiencing this USB double mounting with my antiX 23.2 too. E.g. I attach a pendrive, USB-DATA and I get a second file list tab in zzzFM called “USB-DATA-2” too. I don’t use “unplugdrive”, but I use zzzFM’s “Unmount” function on the Devices pane. Now, if I unmount it, the icon stays a “+”. Then I unmount again, icon becomes “-” – then I unplug it This started occurring 1-2 months ago.

(I didn’t pay attention, because I had USB connection problems earlier, so “who knows….”. A year ago I bought an USB 3.0 PCI-E card to replace the “flimsy” on-motherboard ports. That card worked perfect, until this double mount started to appear recently. This does not depend on whether I use the card or a motherboard port. But maybe it depends on FileSystem type (this pendrive has VFAT), or I don’t know. Maybe we should open a new thread for this and try to figure out? Then I can make more tests. I think not all my devices do this. And maybe not always…)

@Robin, you may also need to consider whether apt update based distro upgrade will update that if you change the name. I guess APT can do that, but I’m not sure. I know apt-updates are not officially “supported”, but fortunately it worked for me for 2 versions (since I use antiX), so hopefully it will work with 25 too.

Other than this, I don’t know which solution is better. Maybe it would be best to remove version number, so it won’t cause further issues? Nobody uses an antiX 25 Control Center in antiX 23, so I don’t think anybody expects other distro release’s software package to work, still we don’t name every software with the distro version name. A version for anitX 25 should not be pushed into the antiX 23 package sources, so this should cause no confusion. If someone directly downloads a version, they should somehow know which one is for their distro. 🙂 (I’m not sure how. 🙂 )

As for git branches, merges, etc, I think it’s better to use a local Git software for that, not the GUI of any web platform. I have little experience with GitLab, but git servers should work same way. And most of the time I work on Windows for my work, so I use Windows only programs for Git Merges (Tortoise Git). Using that it’s “easy” to maintain “two branches” of very similar things. I can “cherry pick” changes from e.g. version 3 into version 5, or backport only the needed changes from version 5 to version 3. Then just push the result to the server. On Linux I usually use “Git Cola” but I have less experience. You are completely right: one has to be a developer to get a reasonable understanding level of Git! 🙂

And in reply to a note somewhere above: I agree that antixscreenshot2 would be an excellent default screenshot app! Please include Hungarian language too – despite I was lazy to translate the included HELP, but the rest of the program is very good in Hungarian. And the program itself is Excellent. Thanks! 🙂 (If requirement, I’ll translate the help. 😉 )

Of course I still hate the Google Drive software that is built in. I don’t have Google and don’t want to receive such software pushed to me by a default app.

I also do not want to see antiX promoting or offering any google application.
Google supports dirty T and ICE, is also heavily involved in supporting Israeli
Military, thus genocide.

If screenshot 2 is to become default that google cloud support should be either removed
or a fully neutral cloud setup offered.

Preference fully removed as uploads to cloud can be done using other less sensitive
applications.

Thanks @Kempelen, feel free to start such a thread, I’ll chime in then. In particular of interest is your observation, that this behaviour is inconsistent, I can confirm this, it meets what I also noticed. Hence it might be hard to track down. One of my suspects is zzzFM itself: I run on zzz-icewm, and have a two-pane setup in the zzzFM file manager GUI, and additionally sometimes open the root-window. Maybe the two instances (or maybe both panes?) cause the issue, each trying to automount the freshly plugged devices?

Or it might be a conflict of the zzzFM automount preferences present in antiX conflicting with some udev rule also present? Whatever, a dedicated thread for this would be great.
