Sadly I couldn’t get it going. It ONLY had Ethernet access, and I don’t recall what I did to overcome that.
I even went to another system, hoping for better results.

Instead, I’m experimenting with my OLD Lenovo X201 now. Not as fast, and the keys have longer keystrokes, but I love this older keyboard with a better feel; it’s the way keys should work!

BTW this image is an update of those monthly builds we had a year or so ago; works great, and at least up to today I’ve been able to update it. Hopefully it’ll still work. Bookworm is relatively static at this point, only a few tiny changes here and there so it ought to be fine.

The last time I used this system I remember it being bogged down. Now I think it was because I had too many of those cutting edge text editors and other utilities. I got rid of nearly all of them, keeping most of the same tools that I have on my every day system.

The result? Fantastic! The only thing slower about this system are the package updates and file downloads. Everything else is nearly the same as my other systems, except that this old system is as solid as can be. I Love it! 🙂

So the botched Alpha test wasn’t all bad; it led me to working on this excellent old system and I’m happy.

I also noticed that the 6.16 kernel doesn’t work well here, so I moved it out and I’m going with the antiX 6.6.101 kernel and it’s also doing very well.

Liquorix kernels had been working well here, but I think I found the limit. I happily use them on my T14; here, our well crafted kernels are the better choice; the T14 can make effective use of the Liquorix kernel features; this one is better with kernels a bit closer to it’s design, so antiX is at home here with all antiX stuff. Talk about “new life”. This system is a model of that with all antiX software. I even am going with the somewhat lighter Web browser, choosing Ungoogled Chromium; much smaller than Chrome, Chromium or Firefox.

I really like the hand-crafted 6.6.101. Significant in that the 6.6 series introduced EEVDF, which all my low-end 64-bit gear took advantage of, but didn’t go so far as to concentrate super hard on the real-time changes that the higher series does.

If 6.6 is going to be part of antiX, I’d like to test a hand-crafted 6.6.102 (or whatever is latest) just before the standard iso’s go to press. It’s a single-point upgrade, but I really like 6.6 as kind of a “dividing line” between old and new so to speak.

Update: I looked at the 6.6.102 changelog, and see some really tasty F2FS upgrades in there. Since the Gazelle installer allows for manual formatting with F2FS, maybe this would be beneficial to upgrade to.

I took the @ProwlerGr antiX 25 Alpha1 Init-Diversity image, switched most of the repo files to Trixie and created my own personal pseudo antiX 25.

I’ll probably find a few kinks in it but it boots and runs surprisingly well on my old Lenovo Thinkpad X201.

Once things are up and running this system runs great. It’s really tough doing a Bookworm to Trixie migration on this old hardware. It took a whopping two hours to complete. THAT’S what I must’ve experienced when I concluded that this system is slow; it’s only slow updating software. Day to day browsing or editing files is quite pleasant. After all, this was a fairly high quality, high end laptop when it was new.

When the X201 came out I was still using 32-bit systems until I got the Dell Inspiron 5558 several years after the X201 was sold.

Anyway I still like this system.

The only “kink” so far is that I haven’t activated any “init-diversity” capabilities, but what other things
I’ve tested have worked quite well, so considering that I used Alpha 1 software as my starting point, this
thing is really good!

Ok here’s a workaround libavcodec61 is missing in the system
so in Manage Packages we install libavcodec61 after that you are able to install libavcodec61:i386 without removing any packages
then to install successfully wine mx25 on antiX 25 from mx repo we install wine-mono10.1.0_1.0-1mx25+1_all.deb, then wine-gecko2.47.4_2.47.4-1mx23+1_amd64.deb and wine-gecko2.47.4_2.47.4-1mx23+1_i386.deb and then wine-staging=10.12-1mx25+1.deb
for it to work we also need apt install wine (Don’t know if this wine debian one is the correct but without it winecfg won’t load) ,

final note: seems not to work because .exe files won’t link to open with wine

I would say that it’s opposite in my case.
I tried to boot a frugal_static installation of the modern kernel, but:

I edited the grub menu (removed the “persist_static” part of the menuentry, as suggested in this old post) and booted.

Why Kernel 5.10.236? It’s supposed that I was running the modern one.

@Vitforlinux Please try using the most recent version 3.33 of the legacy desktop menu. You can fetch it e.g. from https://gitlab.com/Robin-antiX/desktop-menu-antix/-/raw/0b8b7d76713adcd6f19b3489631cd5992e725834/bin/desktop-menu?inline=false This should fix your issue.

This issue has been discussed already widely here in forum in several places, and addressed. (There was an r flag missing to satisfy the updated python syntax, otherwise the escaped characters are not treated any longer literally as intended, but interpreted by python which should not happen since these are no escape sequences but merely e.g. a mitigation for a fluxbox bug.)

Windows is like a submarine. Open a window and serious problems will start.

Some problems encountered:

1) the .Desktop file at /usr/local/lib/antiX/antix23-desktop-files/reservoir/gimp.desktop > GIMP 2.10 and not open Gimp 3

2) the GTK2 programs as a control center are insensitive to the theme, try Arc Dark to see

3) If you use zzzfm GTK3 to have the theme, you lose the antix-trash package

4) If you use Roxterm GTK3 to have the theme opens with small size

5) Liferea not installable no correct dependecies

I tried again with a fresh frugal_static installation of the modern kernel and this time the tool fixed the broken persistence files succesfully. I’m afraid that the previous time I hadn’t just fixed them, but I had also resized rootfs from 8 to 3GB, so as to get rid of the message that “the rootfs file is already as large as all RAM”. Maybe, that had caused the “mount overlayfs” failure.

Well, it’s a bit more complicated.

Case #1: Last time (before Shutdown) booted the full installation of the legacy kernel and now trying to boot a frugal_static installation of the modern kernel.
As I wrote in my #185081 post (corrected by #185693 post), the persistence files are broken but fixable by the “Set Up Live Persistence” tool.

Case #2: Last time (before Shutdown) booted the full installation of the modern kernel and now trying to boot a frugal_static installation of the legacy or modern kernel.
After booting without persistence, the “Set Up Live Persistence” tool shows this message:

antiX Create or Resize Persistence
Read-only device found
The boot/persist device /dev/sd** is read-only
Please select a new device for the persistence file.

Case #3: Last time (before Shutdown) booted the full installation of the legacy kernel and now trying to boot a frugal_static installation of the legacy kernel. No problem.

I think this happens if the home directory is kept in a separate partition. In this case, you can boot the legacy kernel with persistence as long as you haven’t boot the modern kernel yet. But once you have already booted the modern kernel, every time you try to boot the legacy kernel afterwards, you face this:
