antiX-26 released

@PPC GREAT to hear from you. I’ve been configuring and reconfiguring some of my personal stuff recently, and though I use MOSTLY antiX, some of that reconfiguring involves installing a few other distros – after all, I’m a retired techno geek software engineer, so I enjoy that stuff. I installed Slackware CURRENT for a little while then replaced it with a fairly popular distribution in the Arch Linux space – Cachy OS.

I finally smoothed it out so I can play with it when I get bored, so now I’m back to my antiX stuff; this release is the culmination of stuff that several of us have experimented with for at least two years. The gentleman that goes by the handle of @ProwlerGr first approached this forum in 2024 and shared with us multiple builds that he called
“init-diversity”. This has turned out to be one of the initiative of the antiX 26 release.

The good thing about it is that our two stable setups, runit and sysVinit are the two defaults; the one that gets booted unless the choice is altered or moved is runit, but this runit actually implements real runit services for the first time and it’s very good. Now it’s a legitimate choice for anyone, yet sysVinit remains available.

Anyway this version 26 has now been out and released for almost a month now and it’s quite solid. I hope we see you around every now and then; I miss our interaction.

That was really funny! 😀 I’m probably older than you and I love tiling window managers. I used to use qtile, spectrwm, dwm, bspwm, sway, awesomewm and some more. Now I am using herbstluftwm customized by me, I took advantage of it being included on Antix and decided try it out. Now it looks pritty pinky with gray bar and a beautiful pastel colored wallpaper. At any time I’ll install dwm too.

Yeah, everyone has their favorite methods; we ought to know by now that the flexibility of antiX, along with the lean efficiency are key factors that allow people to do whatever they want!

The other day someone even wanted to build something full of systemD – don’t know why, but hey if they wanna maintain it, do what you want!

Maybe he’s trying to make a masterpiece of horror. I hope no one comes out and says that antiX now is coming with the SystemD nightmare! Hahaha

Don’t worry; we’re not going to change who we are or what we do.

Even the decent reviewers know what we’re about; it’s only confusing to the new user who does not know what any of it means.

Hello.

The Mirage version 0.11.2 (the latest version found at https://gitlab.com/thomasross/mirage) is included in the antiX 26 full ISO but has issues; it does not function the way it used to in antiX versions 19, 21, 22, and 23.

One of the problems with Mirage in antiX 26 is that the program displays an image and—at most—the previous or next image in the folder. Mirage version 0.11.2 cannot even run a slideshow, a feature that was always available in older versions of the image viewer.

I believe the version of Mirage included in antiX is buggy. I reported this during the ISO testing phase prior to the official release of antiX 26, but nothing was done about it.

I would like to ask: Is there an alternative to Mirage? Or would it be possible to include a version of the program in antiX 26 that does not suffer from the issues found in the latest version (dated December 24, 2023)?

Onde, um dos problemas do Mirage no antiX 26 é que o programa exibe uma imagem e no máximo a imagem anterior ou a próxima imagem que estiver na pasta. O Mirage da versão 0.11.2 se quer consegue fazer a apresentação de eslaides, como sempre foi possível fazer nas versões antigas do visualizador de imagens.

Eu acredito que a versão do Mirage que temos no antiX está com problemas. Eu relatei isso nos testes das ISOs que antecederam o lançamento oficial do antiX 26, mas nada foi feito a respeito.

Eu pergunto: Se temos uma outra opção ao Mirage ou se seria possível termos no antiX 26 uma versão do programa que não tenha os problemas da versão mais recente que possui a data de 24 de dezembro de 2023?

Mirage version 0.11.2 runs a slideshow for me in antiX 26 without problems.
EDIT: checked for 64 bit (kernels 6.6.139 & 5.10.256) and 32 bit (kernel 5.10.256), runit & dinit.

I just test Mirage 0.11.2 on my daily machine (antiX 26 Trixie) and the diaporama is working for me.

EDIT I use antix 26 trixie icewm, fr_CH locale

I always use antiX with the en_US locale, and I cannot reproduce the symptoms you described. However, I was able to reproduce the issue when I tried it with pt_BR. I don’t know why.

Good point. I confirm that the Mirage version 0.11.2 has issues when I boot with “lang=pt_BR” parameter.

I’ve looked at this in a bit more detail and it seems the version in trixie (antiX-26) is from Debian while the working version for pt_BR in antiX-23 come from our repo

This looks more like a handling issue of filenames and paths in the debian version, maybe if blanks or special characters are in them, than an actual GUI translation issue. The script struggles obviously e.g. on updating the header in GUI Window border with the file name read from the system.

Windows is like a submarine. Open a window and serious problems will start.

The cursor turning into a spinning circle also happens here in antiX 26, exactly as shown in verdy’s screenshot (many thanks for helping with the testing).

The “antixscreenshot” lacks an option to capture the cursor, which is why my screenshots don’t show the cursor turning into a spinning circle while Mirage is running.

I translated all the entries in the “.po” file for the latest version of Mirage, as can be seen in this merge request. I must say that Thomas Ross is one of the few developers of the programs included in the antiX full ISO who accepted my merge request without unnecessary debate. I tested the translated “.po” file with Mirage version 0.11.1—the version I had available—and it didn’t exhibit these issues. This is because I haven’t yet learned how to compile programs to test the translations I create.

I don’t know how to report the issue occurring in version 0.11.2 to Thomas Ross.

O cursor que virou um círculo giratório também ocorre aqui no antiX 26, exatamente como é exibido na captura de tela do verdy (Muito obrigado por ajudar com os testes).

O “antixscreenshot” não tem uma opção para capturar o cursor, por isso, as minhas capturas de tela não exibem o cursor que vira um círculo giratório durante a execução do Mirage.

Eu traduzi todas as entradas do arquivo “.po” da versão mais recente do Mirage, como pode ser observado neste pedido de mesclagem. E digo, que o Thomas Ross é um dos poucos desenvolvedores dos programas que temos na ISO full do antiX que aceitou o meu pedido de mesclagem sem criar discussões desnecesárias. Testei o arquivo “.po” que traduzi na versão 0.11.1 do Mirage e não apresentou estes problemas, porque era a versão que eu tinha disponível. Haja vista que ainda não aprendi a compilar os programas para testar com a tradução que faço.

Eu não sei como reportar o problema que ocorre na versão 0.11.2 para o Thomas Ross.
